Can I share bookmarks between profiles e.g. config setting?

I would like to have a dynamic set of bookmarks that is common between two (or more) profiles. That is, the bookmark files are shared between the profiles. Is there a "config" setting that will point the profile to bookmarks?

The- edmeister Not sure why you think I am using FF 28. [Help}{About} shows me version 35!

Not sure how "Sync" would help, I am not syncronising with another device. In any case, I have an aversion to putting anything on public servers or "cloud" (email only out of necessity and then no contacts or calendar. (Too many hackers around)

I am going to mark this closed and continue to email myself with links to go in the other profile/s

Thanks for your help

You would have to use sync to share bookmarks between profiles.

Be aware that Firefox 29 brought about a new version of Sync, which isn't backwards compatible with Firefox 28 and earlier versions of Firefox. You can update Firefox to use the new Sync, but from my own experience you can't sign up for the old version of Sync any longer; or add any new devices to an existing old Sync account. The old Sync seems to be working on Firefox 28, but by Firefox 38 (around the end of 2015) "the plan" is to retire the old Sync servers.

Sharing a "common" bookmarks file between multiple Profiles hasn't been possible since the Firefox 2.0 versions - that used the old bookmarks.html format for storing bookmarks. All Firefox 3.0 and later versions, with places.sqlite bookmarks / history combined storage, don't allow the bookmarks file to be shared or moved out of the Profile folder.

Thanks for all replies. I have several profiles on the same system that I use depending on the interest at the time. Sometimes, in one profile I see something that I would like to have bookmarked in one of the other profiles. The reply from the-edmeister appears to override cor-el. Looks like I will have to do it the long way round by saving the URL to Desktop. close current Firefox, open other profile, open the URL and then bookmark it. Unless there is a way to have two sessions with different profiles open at the same time?

Sync works fine for synchronizing bookmarks between two different Profiles, if you would be using a newer version of Firefox.

You posted here with Firefox 28, which uses an older version of Sync that is closed to the creation of new accounts and closed for adding a new device to an existing old Sync account.

The -no-remote command allows a 2nd (and additional) Profiles to be opened while a Profile is already running. But don't use that command line "switch" for your Default Profile of you may experience some unexpected results from external programs trying to open the default browser.

If you're not using Firefox 28, then something in the browser that you used to post here has changed some internal Firefox settings to show 28.

Take a look at the System Details to the right of your initial posting. Windows 8 Firefox 28.0

Then there's your useragent string shown in the More System Details: User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0

Here is screen shot showing relevant config parameter and [Help][About]. Also using win 8.1 upgrade. Would the discepancy account for the occasional katani character strings I see in the Tab bar, especially when cache is getting full?

Your info aside is showing a Firefox 28 tag, and your system info is showing a Fx 28 UAS

  • User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:28.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/28.0

Sync is secure and has end to end encryption. Take care using it with bookmarks syncing though. I recommend anyone using Sync for bookmarks ensures they have manual backups. Sync probably would not be suitable for your work methods. The newsync only has a merge option.

That is possible as Ed has explained upthread. It is even possible to open separate bookmarks library manager windows and drag and drop bookmarks even between different Firefox builds

There are other things that need your attention.

Your System Details List shows multiple Flash plugins.

  • Shockwave Flash 12.0 r0
  • Shockwave Flash 16.0 r0

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:plugins page.

You can check the Flash player installation folder for multiple Flash player plugins and remove older version(s) of the plugin (NPSWF32) and possibly (re)install the latest Flash player.

  • (32 bit Windows) C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\
  • (64 bit Windows) C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\

The McAfee SiteAdvisor extension has been reported to cause issues with text Chinese (CJK) characters appearing on tabs, so you can disable this extension until McAfee releases an update to address this issue.

Thanks for the help, I will look into it.

The only other thing worrying me is, how did you get this information?

First, I would rather keep McAffee site adviser and suffer the spurios characters, but it is nice to know the cause.

Regarding Flash: Interesting!!! About: plugins shows only one version; C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_16_0_0_305.dll Addons manager only shows NPSWF32_16_0_0_305.dll Searching the hard drive only version found C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\NPSWF32_16_0_0_305.dll as above.

How is the FF reporting picking up other versions? I looked in Config but found nothing.

Did you check the about:plugins page?

The about:plugins page should show all installed extensions including the path on the hard drive. You can open about: pages via the location/address bar.

cor-el See previous note from me, about:plugins was checked, no trace of outdated macromed.

Try to delete the pluginreg.dat file in the Firefox Profile Folder and maybe addons.sqlite as well to reset the plugin registry databases.

See Re-initializing the plugins database:

Thanks for the information. pluginreg.dat file has been deleted and reconstructed.

Theis thread has now deviated away from the original question which was "solved" in that boohmarks can only be shared through "sync".

You could start a new thread if you wish,

But probably not worth it. At least the thread is just about your own Firefox problems not about other peoples general problems. If you do start a new question thread please mention it here in this thread so we may follow your new posts.
