Have used MF for years, liked it. Then today rec'd message to upgrade to new version. I did: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ It sucks BIG TIME. There's no box to enter word/phrase search, and WAY too much product promotion. All I want is a simple to use search engine that has a box to enter in word/phrase searches. Wish now I wouldn't have "upgraded".

On Windows, you can switch between the classic menu bar and the orange Firefox button. For steps, see: Display the Firefox button menu instead of the menu toolbar.

Hi Beachcomber321,
Sorry you are disappointed, although I am not sure I understand what the problem is. Possibly you have inadvertently made changes or some third party software has.

There is probably little to no visible difference between Firefox 25 and Firefox 26

I imagine something has changed your homepage.
These are the instructions or setting the homepage

  • Use Firefox Button -> Options ->|General| -> [Show my Home Page] [Restore to Default]
See How to set the home page
You have options to use the default or choose whatever page or pages you prefer, or a drag and drop method of doing that.
  • The default homepage does have a search bar in the middle of it. Sometimes minimal promotional messages, and useful icons for Firefox tasks.
    • I attach a screenshot of the current default homepage.
  • You will see that if you type into the address-bar about:home" then left click the green arrowhead.

Please try that or give more details about your problem and a screenshot so I understand what you are seeing

There is a possibility yo have unwanted software that will need dealing with

Hello again. The example you provided is exactly what I'm looking for - to regain. I would be grateful if you would kindly send me the link so I can install it.

Hi again Beachcomber 321,

Please try to follow the instructions in my last post.

What do you see if you type in about:home that is the link for the page with the search bar in the middle. It can even be used as a bookmark.

Screen shots may help. Maybe it is the new page tabs that you do not like. they have nine thumbnails in them now. about:newtab

Like most things Firefox there are lots of opportunity to customise and I do not know what you are seeing.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in full screen mode (press F11 or Fn + F11 to toggle; Mac: Command+Shift+F).

If you are in full screen mode then hover the mouse to the top of the screen to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear. Click the Maximize button (top right corner of the Navigation Toolbar) to leave full screen mode or right-click empty space on a toolbar and choose "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press the F11 key.

You can use one of these to set which toolbars to show.

  • Firefox menu button > Options
  • View > Toolbars (press F10 to display the menu bar)
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Hi John 99.

Per instructions I typed in about:home. The page I've wanted came up. But...it seems to dead. I can type into the text box -- but nothing happens when I click Search...likewise when I click Settings at the bottom...the page seems dead. Although, I am able to install Navigation Toolbar and Menu Bar. Here is the URL in the Navigation Toolbar: file:///C:/Users/ali/Desktop/Mozilla%20Firefox%20Start%20Page.xht

I am now attempting to attach a Screenshot here.

I'm confused: normally if you type about:home in the address bar and press Enter, you get the attached.

But your screen shot shows a file:// loaded from disk. Did you save the page to disk, or did it somehow save itself automatically? Due to the way scripting permissions work, you need to use the real built-in page, and not a saved copy.

Ok...it's working now. Whew! Finally  :-)

How do I Create Shortcut...I did right click, but see no Create Shortcut.

Hi Beachcomber321, you want to create a shortcut to about:home on your desktop? The about: pages are a special case. What you need to do is:

(1) Duplicate your Firefox program shortcut. One way is to Ctrl+drag and drop it. Another would be to right-click>copy and right-click>paste

(2) Add "about:home" as the page you want to open with the new shortcut.

right-click > Properties > Shortcut tab

On the Target line, move your cursor to the end after firefox.exe" and add:

 about:home

to the end.

(3) Rename the new shortcut so you can tell them apart.

Any luck?

Glad we seem to be making progress in sorting this out.

Some other ideas that may help consider

  • Setting and Using homepage. See my original post above.
    • By default that is the the search page that you like. It is easy to add additional pages and say open three tabs at once.
    • Those may be used at anytime, even if you do not open with them, just click on the Home Button (House icon) whilst on a new tab or a tab you have finished with for a while.
  • Take a look at this introductory page
    http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/central/
    • It is interactive, move the mouse over content like the labelled Home Button
    • it also has a short video clip, and many useful links

Hello John 99. I watched the video, made Firefox my home page. Now when I click on the icon that previously took me to www.mozilla.org/en-US/ (where I typed in about:home ) it instead takes me to Firefox search...but there is no Firefox button in the upper left corner of the screen. So, I'm unsure I'm actually on the correct page. The page looks very much like your screen shot but without a Firefox button in the upper left.

Hi Jscher2000. I made Firefox my home page. So, I'm unsure I'm actually on the correct page. The page looks very much like the screen shot John99 sent (see his screen shot in above messages) but there is no Firefox button in the upper left. Have made numerous attempts all ending with the same results: no Firefox button in the upper left of screen.
