Firefox says it 'can't initialise' it's 'security component', probably due to profile files' problems!

It's on an Acer netbook, running XP; after Outlook Express 'was unable to open' it's 'message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disc is full.' (Neither of those is anywhere near being the case!) Sent it's error report to MS but no reply to that, yet. Firefox says to 'check that this (profile) directory has no read/write restrictions' but it's run perfectly well for the year I've had the netbook & I've not changed those settings. Please help, thanks!
