I keep getting shown message that tell me there is an important firefox update.

Inevitably it is a scam like this one: https://eixodbusinesspme.org/9801656307614/cfe0100554819d3f8fe643ad41f6d5f8.html

Why can't you set firefox up so that it filters for fraudulent firefox updates and sends them to the bit bucket.

I suspect a lot of firefox users get nailed by these creeps.

It seems like you might have a virus on your computer. I'd try the steps at Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware to remove it.

There seem to have been quite a few reports of similar problems recently.

It often happens that users search for updates and get a bad link, or maybe visit a site that offers such links, but they should not just suddenly pop up on your computer, unless you have malware.

For the benefit of anyone unsure about how to update Firefox see

Anyone wishing to help by reporting such problems to relevant authorities see James' reply: /questions/1129014#answer-892207

NOTE The site you mention

  • is 404 so hopefully already taken down
  • may not be related to the following problem site
You can also report at https://www.mozilla.org/legal/fraud-report/ as a distributing Firefox/malware. This url is on bottom of many mozilla.org pages. You can also try to report at http://publicdomainregistry.com/report-abuse-2/ since they have been the Registrar for these spam sites and may not be aware of his misuse. The person(s) behind this site has been registering the fake Firefox updates sites even only a day before they got reported on forum here. For example https://www.scamadviser.com/check-website/ohxicfamilybuilder.org Normally these fake Firefox Firefox update sites much like this one over the last few years have come and gone. This time around the individual(s) behind this scam has been more aggressive.

If you get this popup again can you save the .exe to disk (do not run it) and please upload it to https://www.virustotal.com/ and provide the link after scan. Also Tyler Downer would like a copy if possible as mentioned in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/forums/contributors/712056#post-69483
