How to prevent specific page to display among suggested and top sites when opening a new tab?

I like the FF feature that displays top and suggested sites when opening a new tab. I use my laptop both for work and for leisure. But as I share the office with coworkers, I don't want to have all sites I visit listed there. No matter how many times I remove a specific site from this results, it keeps popping up.

I am sure adding an option to prevent certain sites from ever displaying there, would benefit a lot of FF users, who share the same problem. I am sure that I am just one of many with the same problem.

You can change the order of the boxes on the about:newtab page and drag an item to a different tile to pin it to that position or you can remove a website by clicking the close X to block that URL. You can drag a bookmark or history item from the sidebar and drop it in a tile on the about:newtab page to pin this item and have your own favorites sites present.

Changes made manually on the about:newtab page are stored in prefs that you can find on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.pinned stores websites that you have pinned to a tile.
  • browser.newtabpage.blocked stores websites that you have removed by clicking the X button in a tile.

If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites#w_remove-a-site If you "remove" a site from new tab, does it stay removed, or does it return later? Also, you can "pin" sites to new tab which would prevent other sites from getting added.

Also, there might be an extension that offers a "block" feature for specific URL's. I know that new tab tools - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/ - doesn't add a feature like that. You can check this search of AMO for "new tab" and see what you can come up with.

As far as thinking / wanting / wishing that Firefox makes changes to existing features, you have to be careful what you wish for with changes to existing features - "things" might become worse in the process. Firefox 39 "got" modified upper and lower margins for the new tab page. Rows and columns of tiles has changed for some users; 5 cols x 3 rows may have become 4 tiles in one row = 15 tiles in Fx38& prior, down to only 4 tiles in Fx39.
