Hi Fred, Thanks for the suggestion but, alas, this is more or less what I've been doing.

The installation is successful, but when I go to look at the list of plug-ins, this new plug-in is not there, and even after I quite and restart firefox, when I return to the webpage that required FlashPlayer, I still get the message: "you need to install Flash Player to play this content." "DOwnload Flash Player now."

What am I missing?

Did you download flash from Adobe? It could be a fake program.

Yes, it COULD be a fake program, but I did download it from Adobe - from the link you provided, so that seems ... unlikely.

When I look at my OS "system Preferences", I can see a "copy" of Flash Player. which is clearly very separate from the ShockWave Flash that is disabled in my Firefox ... Tools......add-ons.....plug-ins.

If I click on the one in System Preferences, and ask it to check for updates, I get the message - after it links to the adobe website - "No New Updates. Adobe® Flash® Player is up to date on this system." But when I try to access a video in Firefox, I'm told I need to install FlashPlayer.

Type about:plugins<enter> in the address bar. Now search for the plug-in.

 Thank you for your continued interest in my plight.

When I do "about:plugins" I can see a listing of all the plugins I have in Firefox, including the disabled "Shockwave Flash". but there is no plugin for Adobe Flash Player. Adobe Flash Player does appear in my system preferences, and shows as the current version.

I am beginning to get the impression that I need a plugin to enable Firefox to use Adobe Flash Player.

Also, I should probably mentioned that I am able to play these same videos in Safari.

Download the installer and save it in the computer.

Start your Computer in safe mode with networking. Then start Firefox. Try Safe web sites. Is the problem still there?

 Problem solved. Apparently Adobe Flash Player installs a plugin to Firefox that is named "Shockwave Flash", and I had disabled that thinking it might have been an insecure bit of software.

For some reason, Flash is listed as Shockwave Flash, and Shockwave is listed as Shockwave for Director.
