Why does CPU usage go up after I look at several webpages?

I'm running Firefox 3.6.12 on XP Home. After I browse for a while, my CPU usage goes up above 45% (sometimes above 90%) and does not come down as I close tabs. Minutes ago, I closed all pages but the Firefox support page, and my CPU usage or firefox.exe was above 45%. When I restarted Firefox on the same webpage, firefox.exe usage came down to between 1 and 10%. Sometimes I notice significant slowdown in my computer which goes away if I restart Firefox. I don't have to start Firefox in safe mode to get the reduction in CPU usage.

On December 19, 2010 I noticed that my CPU usage was high for long periods only when I was logged in to my e-mail account. Most of the CPU usage appeared to be on plugin-container.exe. My e-mail account is on webmail. netzero.net. Could it be that some of the ads on netzero's website are the problem?

I also experience 100% CPU usage, with 75%-95% assigned to Firefox.exe, after 3-4 hours of internet use. This locks up my PC and makes it unusable. This is extremely frustrating.
