Backing up my POP emails and folders so I can reinstall as IMAP
How do I back up my Thunderbird emails and folders so that I can reinstall them? Here's why I'm asking. My email on Thunderbird is currently a POP account, which means my folders only reside on my computer and are not accessible on my other devices. I need to change my email to IMAP so the folders reside on my email provider's computer and are thus available on all my devices. Before I make that change, I'm told I have to back up my existing emails and folders. How do I do that? How do I reinstall them once I've reconfigured Thunderbird to IMAP?

- first, set the POP account to NOT prompt for messages
- set up the IMAP account alongside the POP account.
- then, create a manual filter to upload your POP input folder to your IMAP input folder. The filter should be to COPY, not MOVE. This can sometimes be problematic as IMAP was not designed for high volume uploads.
- next, do the same for your POP sent folder (Note: by copying and not moving your POP account serves as your backup during this process.)
After that, check that you have the messages in the IMAP account. At this point, you can delete the POP account
