Deleting email on earthlink webmail thunderbird deletes my local copies. Bad.
I have 3 email accounts at earthlink.net. Recently re-installed thunderbird (new OS hard-drive):
1) Account settings in Thunderbird appears identical for all 3 accounts (except for email address, of course.)
2) I can delete email on the earthlink server for 2 accounts ... local copies stay on my PC. GOOD.
3) on one account deleting on server ALSO deletes local copies. BAD. Very bad.
Can't figure out why.

Sounds like you are using IMAP instead of POP for the account in question. That would be normal operation for IMAP.
