Email received alert reports more messages than actually received
When the alert pops up, it might report e.g. 5 messages received but when I look, I can find only 3. I have looked through all folders, including the trash folder. I have been having trouble with some messages not being received. I wonder if the two problems are linked.

Are you using gmail? Might it be misleadingly reporting multiple occurrences of one message in multiple folders e.g. Inbox, Important, All Mail?
Have you also checked Junk?
