Hi everyone,

I need to apologize in advance, because I'm sure this question has been asked and answered before, possibly many times. However, I've tried searching with several different search terms, but I guess I haven't found a good combination, because I get hundreds of results and the first several pages don't have an answer for me.

I like to have my folders sorted so that the ones I use most are at the top of the folder list. Unfortunately, I tried doing this by dragging several folders into different positions in the folder list. Those folders ended up as subfolders of Inbox or other folders. I've since discovered the Manually Sort Folders add-on, but as far as I can tell, it will only let me move folders up and down, but not left or right to change the nesting level.

How can I promote these sub-folders to the top level in the folder list (in other words, move them to the left or remove the indent)?

Thanks very much for your help.

The following examples should help you sort things out. If you have something like this: > mail account name folder > > Folder A > > Folder B > > Folder C > > Folder D > > Folder E

This means all the Folders 'A - E' are top level folders in the 'mail account name' folder.

Manually Sort Folders addon will allow you to sort the top level folders. Move them up or down. So you can move things into a different order using the addon within the mail account name folder.

Let's assume you have sorted the order of the top level folders as shown below. > mail account name folder > > Folder A > > Folder E > > Folder C > > Folder B > > Folder D

An indented folder means it is subfolder to the top level folder. You can do this in the Folder Pane - not using the Addon. Example: you want Folder E to be a subfolder of A, - left click on Folder E and hold down to grab Folder E. Then drag Folder E up and hover over Folder A when you release the mouse it is dropped into Folder A and the list will look like this: > mail account name folder > > Folder A > > > Folder E > > Folder C > > Folder B > > Folder D

Let's pretend you made an error, so need to move Folder E back as a top level folder. Left click and hold down to grab Folder E. Then drag Folder E up and hover over the 'mail account name' folder and then release the mouse. This moves Folder E out of Folder A and drops Folder E back into the mail account name folder, so it will get given a top level folder status. But it will be added to the bottom of the list, so now the list will look like this:

> mail account name > > Folder A > > Folder C > > Folder B > > Folder D > > Folder E

If you want to move it up the order then use the Addon to move it up.

Hope this will help you.

There is another option you can use which you might prefer.

You can choose specific folders perhaps those you use most frequently and set them up as 'Favourite folders'.

  • Right click on folder and select 'Favourite folder' option.

Then you can select to see all those 'Favourite folders' at the top of the Folder Pane.

  • Menu icon > View > Folders
  • You will see 'All' is already selected - leave as it is.
  • Select 'Favourite Folders'

All the 'Favourite folder' now display at the top of the Folder Pane. Below is still the original list of mail accounts and folders. See image below showing an example of 'Favourite folders' I set the 'Inbox' and 'Thunderbird' as Favourite Folders.
