Attaching File to Forum Post or WebMail Message Crashes Firefox

At first after opening up Firefox I can attach files to either a Web-mail (Comcast) message or a post to any arbitrary forum through the file-locator dialog without problems. After a while, however, as I'm drilling down through the directory structure in the dialog and before I get to the file I want, Firefox simply crashes. This has been happening over several versions of Firefox, and I haven't bothered to report it (other than the automatically generated problem reports that I assume you're getting), but I've finally gotten fed up.

Restarting Firefox, going immediately to the Web-mail message or forum post in question, and trying the attachment again works just fine. Then, as more tabs get opened or through some other combination of events over time, the same happens again with a different message, post, and/or file.

I'm currently running Firefox vs. 45.0.2 (but this has happened over several versions for considerable time) running in the default sandbox of Sandboxie registered vs. 5.10 64 bit (and at least a few previous versions) under Windows 7 SP1 (64 bit) in a "standard user" account.

If you need more information, please be specific. -- jclarkw

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

While still in Safe Mode,

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

FredMcD -- Thanks for the quick response. I think I understand your suggestions, but there appears to be a fundamental problem: Since I normally only run Firefox inside a sandbox, opening it in "safe mode" outside the sandbox and entering "about:crashes" inevitably yields "No crash reports have been submitted." Similarly, re-opening it within the sandbox after a crash yields the same result (though I don't currently know how to open it in "safe mode" inside the sandbox). I see only two possible solutions:

1) I can take a chance and run Firefox for an extended period outside the sandbox in hopes that the problem (which you will recall is only occasional with an unknown trigger) will eventually recur. That should generate a crash report that gets reported and remembered...

2) If I can figure out how to permit the crash reporting to get saved outside the sandbox, then I can probably retrieve it as you suggest. Currently I don't know what files I have to permit to do this...

Finally, I don't have much hope of getting the problem to occur in "safe mode" (even if it would) since I don't know how to trigger it.

Do you see other options I have overlooked, or do you have a solution to (2)? -- jclarkw

As far as I can tell so far, this problem does not occur with Firefox running outside the sandbox, so I'm not getting anywhere with (1) -- jclarkw

I don't know about sandbox. I've called the big guys to help you. Good luck.

No word so far from the "big guys." My remaining legitimate question is, what files do I have to permit outside the sandbox to allow Firefox crash reporting to get through? Then maybe I can get you enough information to figure out what's going wrong! -- jclarkw

Hello. I understand that there are crashes happening when entering a forum post, adding an attachment to a web mail service and this happens sporadically. However in order to collect troubleshooting data we need to know what services need to be allowed out in order to process the submission of a crash report.

I am hoping its not that complicated. I downloaded a fresh copy of Firefox 64bit version. I might like to learn more about what you are using as a sandbox since there are a few references that I have been exposed to: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Sandbox

I asked for some help and was reminded that it is called crashreporter.exe It needs access to the internet as well as the folder path where the working crash directory for your Firefox profile is.

C:\Users\<yourname>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports

It could also be caused by the sandbox, do you have any insight on this or what sandbox is being used?

Thank you

"I [was then] running Firefox vs. 45.0.2 (but this has happened over several versions for considerable time) running in the default sandbox of Sandboxie registered vs. 5.10 64 bit (and at least a few previous versions) under Windows 7 SP1 (64 bit) in a "standard user" account." I'm currently running Firefox 46.0.1 (doesn't explicitly say 64-bit). Beyond getting a crash report to you, I have no idea at present whether Sandboxie or Firefox is causing the problem...

It's not "when entering a forum post" but only when drilling down through the file menu in the process of adding an attachment to a forum post or Web mail.

You have given me some tips that might help me figure out how to allow whatever crashreporter.exe need to do. Meanwhile, any more information would be appreciated. -- jcalrkw
