Tools/options/advanced/updates...."Use a background service to install updates" was checked. I did not check this box and it installed an update without my permission. How do I get rid of it?

If you still need to downgrade to the version you were using before the upgrade, there is a website (linked on the page I just asked you to check out) listing the older versions. You might be successful in reverting back to an older version by installing Firefox from that page.
