Unable to import .csv contacts files from windows thunderbird to thunderbird on apple mac

I have been working with Thunderbird for a number of years on an Apple Mac. The current installation was buggy largely due to the clogged mail box folders. Having deleted and compressed, I then saved my profile and uninstalled/reinstalled Thunderbird. Copied over my old profile and everything was now good apart from the contacts. I did not want to risk my new smoothly working installation so I put my "old" profile on a memory stick and transferred it to a Windows 10 laptop I had been kindly lent for this purpose, installed Thunderbird there, went to my contacts and then exported them as .csv files. There are about 10 separate lists. I then saved them back to the memory stick and tried to import them into the new installation on the MAC. When asking from where to import the files the said .csv were greyed out. I tried copying them to the desktop, but still Thunderbird could not see them to import.

Help, all suggestions welcome.
