When I search Messages (Ctrl+Shift+F) there used to be an option to select "Body" Contains [a text string]. But it's disappeared. The body of my emails IS downloaded and 'Keep messages in all folders for this account on this computer' IS checked in the Sync. and Storage section of Tools/Account Settings. So how can I get the ability to search the body back?

Tag names can be changed via message > tag > manage tags. But how can I change the tag ID ?

Let's say for example, I want to change the tag ID "unreplied" to "needsreply".

steps:

  1. in user.js: change user_pref("mailnews.tags.unreplied.tag", "unreplied"); to user_pref("mailnews.tags.needsreply.tag", "needsreply");

  2. search&replace all instances of regexp ^X-Mozilla-Keys:[^\r\n]+unreplied in all .eml files

  3. Some tags are not stored as "X-Mozilla-Keys" inside the .eml file but elsewhere ( https://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=3123346 ). How can I replace "unreplied" with "needsreply" there? (If I don't do this, messages previously tagged as "unreplied" won't have the "needsreply" tag after step 1.)

Hi, I am feeling pretty stupid, as I have been using Thunderbird for years on my PC. Now, on my laptop I can't find where to compose a new email. The new email button is not anywhere to be found, and up until today there was something that I could click on to "create a new email" in the top RH corner, but that is gone as well.

HELP

thanks in advance Graeme

Not sure what has changed, but I have a lot of sub-folders in my email handler, I've set up filters and generally, the incoming mail get through the filters and ends up in the correct sub-folders, but today, I've been trying to add one sub and it fails. No message, no error. Just no sub-folder creation. Did an update do this to me? And others?

Can't configure New Release 139_0_2 with Classic View from Release 128.11

My desktop computer died, so I needed to copy all my data files from backup (which worked fine) and then install all the apps that I regularly run on my laptop. When I installed Thunderbird, I got the latest Release 139.02. It behaves very differently from what I think is called the "Classic View" that was running on my Desktop. I REALLY hate it, but can't figure out how to set the Thunderbird parameters to do that. My problems include:

-- Overview of Thunderbird "Views". I can't find any documentation that explains [a] the various viewing options that Thunderbird offers and [b] EXACTLY how to set them.

-- Release Notes. I haven't found any release notes to explain when/why a major change to view was done.

-- Periodically, even for same release, Thunderbird CHANGES my parameter settings. Most annoying is changing the General Message-List settings to "Show Only Display Names For People in My Address Book". I live in a retirement community where many husbands & wives share the same Email address. With this setting, Thunderbird shows the name associate with the first message I received from this Email address. So the heading doesn't show which person actually sent it (although I can make a good guess when Thunderbird is telling me it came from a dead person. [g]

Is there ANY way I can get Release 139.0.2 to display messages the way I've been seeing them for at least 10 years? I REALLY need help. (If I can't get Thunderbird to behave the way I want, seem like I might as well switch to reading/writing messages directly from Google Gmail web site. It's equally lacking in documentation, but I suppose that eventually I could figure it out.)

Thanks in advance for any help anybody can offer.GMail, I'd seriously consider switch to using Gmail directly without Thunderbird.)

I have an 8 year old PC that I have been using Thunderbird on its entire life. I have 5 email accounts (from my own website if that matters) on it for personal use that have tons of information.

I bought a new computer and have not been able to move my old data to it. The old computer uses Windows 10 with Thunderbird Version 115.5.2 (32 bit). The new computer uses Windows 11 and I have tried several Thunderbird versions with the current one being 128.12 0esr (32 bit). I have added one of my email accounts to my new computer, but it contains none of my previous data (emails, contacts, directories, etc.), just a bare bones account that only receives new email.

I have repeatedly tried to move my entire source computer setup and data going through all of the described steps including copying the previous Thunderbird folder to a flash drive. I then follow the directions for copying and pasting my source data into the new computer's "roaming" section. It goes through all the steps including asking if I want to overwrite existing files. I have almost 14,000 files and as the process continues, I can see file names being added just as I would expect.

After everything is complete, when I restart Thunderbird, the only access I have is once again to the bare bones new email account. There is no data, nothing at all, from my source computer.

Help please, this has gotten beyond frustrating.

I'm aware of the many caveats regarding use of 'Repair Folder'. It's widely known that the results are...inconsistent, to put it charitably. Nevertheless...

I keep vast quantities of messages in local folders. For some of those folders, I manually archive the contents annually, by creating a new folder with the name of the year ("2025"), then dragging messages from the existing folder to the new folder. This sometimes works. More often than not though, it fails in one way or another. Sometimes I drag them across, a handful of them show up in the new folder, but then the rest just sit there in the old folder, in selected state, but with no activity taking place. Sometimes merely selecting smaller 'chunks' of messages to drag across will work. In others, such as last night, even that didn't work.

I then invoked 'Repair Folder' in a vain attempt at recovery; sometimes that will clear the issue. However, when I did this, what happened is that the chunk of messages that were selected wound up having all their date fields (in the display) reset to near the epoch - January 20, 1970. When I view the message source, the dates are correct.

I'm unable to find a way to recover from this.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Tbird starts to d/l messages: "nn of mm new messages" counts up and just before it gets to the last few, it stops. It doesn't put the retrieved messages in the inbox or anything. Then it gives this error message:

"The DELE command did not succeed. Error marking a message as deleted. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded: Too many requests."

But this is POP mail, so delete request don't go back to the mail server. The number of emails deleted from the local db shouldn't have any effect on d/l... I'm mightily confused.

Yes, I did delete thousands of old emails. Still shouldn't make any difference for retrieving mail, nor should the client be overwhelmed by commands it successfully executed days ago.

New computer Ubuntu 24.04 Mate, older Ubuntu 22.04 Cinnamon. Following support transfer directions (open Thunderbird on new PC, close it, paste a copy of older .thunderbird from USB stick to .thunderbird on new, over write), when I open Thunderbird no accounts are shown only the create account screen. I find no update path for older Thunderbird. New PC came with 128 esr but I found a tarball of 115 .18.0, installed it and followed transfer directions with the same results. Seems like the esr version uses a profile ending with esr and ignores my older one. What are my options for transferring 20 years of significant messages? The hard way might be to identify the account specific files in my older profile and copy them into the new esr profile...

Hi everyone I use Thunderbird Portable on an external SSD. I switch between a Windows 10 and a Windows 11 computer. On the Win11, I am experiencing some issues. When I run TB, sometimes the app "loses memory" and it opens as the first time, although the local folders seemingly should have all the emails (some folders have appropriate date and time, and the total size of the folder is OK). But I have no possibility to recover these emails. I tried to import them, but there always is some problem. I tried to copy all the folders in a previous (working) backup copy of TB, but still doesn't work.... how can I fix this?

one of our email addresses was hacked so we changed the password on that one email account but now we have a pop up window every time we open thunderbird asking to enter the password for two of our addresses. The system won't accept the original password nor the new one. It keeps saying it failed so I can't get into my account passwords screen to see what is going on. We are getting our emails. just that darn window keeps popping up every time. we can send emails too.
