Can't get Firefox for Android to use local DNS resolvers

I host services on my local network like: miniflux.thepromised.lan and usually accessed them by going to the short hostname directly like: http://miniflux and it just worked great until a few Firefox releases ago. I don't know when it stopped working but I can't get firefox to use my local DNS servers on my own wifi to resolve these local addresses.

My current workaround is to connect to my local vpn and force all traffic that way. No other app on my android device has this issue. Chrome works exactly as expected. I can also open a live dashboard to my pihole instance and watch in real time for dns queries that come over the wire. I can't get firefox to use these local servers at all.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
