How can I store my settings on an external drive and configure FF to use that path? I want to leave the desktop clean.

The idea is to run FF on several desktops (work, home, cafe etc) but making it look like the same one. This also ensures that no personal information is left on the desktop and that there is no need to sync data for the NSA to collect.

You can also consider to run Firefox in Private Browsing mode in such situations when you are not at home or otherwise do not wish to store personal data.
Firefox doesn't store data on the hard drive when you are in Private Browsing mode.
