I will use Control + / - to zoom in and out, and one size larger or smaller would not have that problem. But there are different letters with different fonts it seems. Some have a problem with S, others I, or U.. Wondering if I can try something without reinstalling Firefox. I am running 16.02 on Lubuntu.

You can use this extension to see which fonts are used for text that is selected (right-click context menu: Show fonts in selection).

You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).

Thanks Cor-el, it seems the upgrade (which was automatic..?) from 16.02 to 17 took care of it. Although I did not track which pages definitely had this issue from before I'm not seeing it at all now.

Scratch that, still bad - thanks for the suggestions though good to know I can troubleshoot it that way.

Did you try to remove some of the involved fonts temporarily to see if that makes Firefox another font more consistently?

I think I identified the bad font (Liberation Sans) with fontinfo and removed it, installed the MS core fonts instead and confirmed the page, Gmail in this case was using other fonts on the same page after. Maybe I'll reinstall the Lib Sans package but for now it looks good, and of course it does look like it was an easy enough fix. Thanks again for the info.

Odd, I noticed it again after I reinstalled the Liberation sans font and then removed it again, but this time the font info was exactly the same after removal. I thought maybe it was the Nimbus Sans font that's part of the package but it is still showing under fontinfo ...

Any luck with installing DejaVu fonts if you currently do not have it?

It's looking like it's not a Firefox issue, I just saw it with the Lubuntu "Start" menu - but logged out to switch it to the regular desktop (as opposed to the Netbook interface) and it was fine. I will keep DejaVu in mind, though.
