When I try to save anything, whatever the cursor happens to point at is inserted as the file name. That is extremely annoying. Either a file already has a name or I will give it the name I want. Is there any way to turn off this feature?

Hello.

It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in safe mode (don't forget to select Disable all add-ons when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See this article for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and this one for plugins.

If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.

If the problem does not disappear when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there. Please have no fear of following my instructions to the line, as all can be easily undone.

I disabled all addons and it still behaves the same. 1. Right click, select "Save Page As" (or any type of download) 2. Select a folder. 3. Run the cursor over a file name. 4. The file name of the download is changed to whatever the cursor points to.

This may be a Windows issue. Just to be sure, however, can you please try it in a new (temporary) Firefox profile and see if the issue is still present? See this article to know how to create a new Firefox profile. Please report back the results.

Ok, I did that and it works exactly the same.

Then it's probably a Windows issue. I remind you that the "Save File..." manager is system specific, and not an integral part of Firefox. I expect that this also happens on other browsers that use the native manager? I can see this happening if your Windows is selecting files on hover, rather than on click. But I can't be more specific, I'm sorry.

Ok, I tried IE and it does the same thing. I have never tried IE before.

BTW, what's wrong with the support site? I try to reply and it says I need to sign in. So I click the link to sign in and it says I am signed in. But when I go back to the question it still says I need to sign in. After about ten minutes of this nonsense the reply box suddenly shows up and I can type a reply. Why is it such a struggle every time I come here?
