Firefox suddenly cannot be loaded, one day yes, the next nothing.

Firefox is my default browser. When I click on the shortcut it does nothing. When I try to enter it in another browser it comes up but I cannot use it. The only clue I have been able to find is that I need to restart firefox but I am unsure of how to do this. I figure this is somehow coming from outside since I can access the internet from Safari. Any clues?

Since this is Windows XP I might first check to make sure that Firefox is not already running in the Task Manager when you click on the Firefox icon.
