I've reported these issues before with no response. I've uninstalled reinstalled cleared cache and cookies searched another forums et cetera. Why must I manually update when it's set to auto update? When I set controls to ask where to download items it bypasses that and downloads it as a temp file where I have to cut it out of explorer and paste it where I would like to save it.

Let's start with the first issue. I looked at your January thread (https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1436311) and after going back and forth with other contributors you said:

pdfs, docs, music, anything downloadable. By default location is set to downloads With the box checked to ask every time, but as soon as I download something it goes straight to the downloads folder and opens it in Firefox.

On the Settings page, you'll notice multiple sections affecting downloads:

(1) Default downloads folder and auto-saving

You already checked the box for "Always ask you where to save files". Based on this, Firefox will use open a folder browser for files that have the "Save file" action in the Applications list box. So on to that box...

(2) Applications list box

For recognized file types, this list indicates whether Firefox should save the file -- showing a folder browser -- or open it in a tab or hand it over to another application.

When Firefox opens a file in a tab or hands it over to another application, it does NOT ask you where to save the file; it automatically uses the "Save files to" folder set in the previous section or -- if you went into about:config and set Firefox to start downloads in the temp folder -- the system temp folder.

PDF Files - do you want these to open in Firefox (default setting), or just get saved? Change the preference for Portable Document Format (PDF) and any Acrobat file types to Save File if that is your preference. Then you can use the Downloads list to open the file in your preferred PDF reader.

Docs - Firefox can show text files, but not most document types, so you'll need to describe these in more detail for us to understand why they open in Firefox.

Music - Firefox can play MP3 files and some other formats in a tab. If you never want Firefox to play media in a stand-alone tab, I'll give the steps to disable that player at the end of this reply.

(3) Other files (below the list box)

If there aren't standing instructions in the Applications list box, you can set Firefox either to save the file automatically or ask you what you want to do with it.

Disable "Stand-Alone" Media Player

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste stand-alone and pause while the list is filtered

Firefox should list two preferences

(3) Double-click the media.play-stand-alone preference to switch the value from true to false

(4) Double-click the media.wmf.play-stand-alone preference to switch the value from true to false

With this change, Firefox still can play media in an embedded player in a page, but won't try to play downloads.
