trusted friend sent an mp4 attachment firefox40 (default) could not open it internet explorer could not open it

i downloaded a file from microsoft (wmpfirefoxplugin) which i "ran" or "installed"

must be something else that is missing, e.g., a codex ? or i am so far from solving this problem

i don't know where the problem is (firefox or windowsxp) or maybe because i use xp there is no solution

any clear, very clear instructions on what i can do, should do, need to do ?

thnx john

p.s. - how will i know if this issue is addressed, via email ? pss - (firefox's) educated guesses misunderstood my op.sys, then listed some "installed plugins"

        * Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 11.0.8
        * GEPlugin
        * NPRuntime Script Plug-in Library for Java(TM) Deploy
        * DRM Netscape Network Object
        * DRM Store Netscape Plugin
        * Shockwave Flash 18.0 r0
        * Npdsplay dll
        * Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) plug-in for Mozilla browsers
i didn't know what that means. TO install any/all of those plugins or were they guesses of what i may have already installed on my pc

i'm a mess trying to keep a pc running winxp and avoiding buying a new one with win10 thnx again

Firefox can't play MP4s on its own. On Windows Vista and newer, Firefox can use Media Foundation, but Microsoft never released Media Foundation for XP. So most likely you will need to use an external player.

I think the Windows Media Player might work, I can't test that on XP myself. Or you could try one of these:
