Videos are blank after plugging in a monitor via hdmi unless browser is restarted

When i plug an external monitor into my laptop via hdmi, my already open window of firefox won't display videos, only sound. I have to restart my browser for the videos to show. And then when I unplug my hdmi to just use my laptop, i have to restart the browser again.

To find the correct solution to your problem, we need some more non-personal information from you. Please do the following:

  1. Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click on help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information.
    • Type about:support into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
  2. At the top of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Updating my graphics display drivers did not solve the issue. Disabling hardware acceleration however did work. But is there no way for this issue to go away with hardware acceleration on?

Unfortunately not. Once the Firefox developers make enough changes that break Hardware acceleration for a graphics card, updating the drivers for the card is the last resort. Especially if you have a old graphics card.

I'm curious, what model card are you seeing this on?

I have a pretty good dedicated gpu, so i would be highly surprised if it cant handle hardware acceleration :/

Hmm where did you go to update your drivers? It looks like there's still some newer drivers available for your Nvidia card.

Newest looks like: 353.30 (9.18.13.5330), released 7/22/2015 Yours is 344.48 (9.18.13.4448) from 10/16/2014.

I found it here: http://www.geforce.com/drivers which lead me to: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/86506

I've seen advice here to do a system restore point before installing graphic card driver updates: http://www.komeil.com/blog/nvidia-driver-windows-7-laptop-modded-inf

But maybe that's being too paranoid. But I don't want any weird issues to popup as result of your update. I don't trust graphics card driver updates these days.

The 1st one is dated 7/24/2015 - 15.36.23.64.4251 (Latest) and the one after that is 5/29/2015 - 15.36.21.64.4222 (Previously released). Make sure to install the 64-bit one. Installing the 32-bit sounds like it might mess your system up.

I'm no graphics card expert by any means. But maybe you can try updating the Intel drivers first, reboot the laptop then test out the external monitor with Firefox again. If still broken, try the Nvidia driver update. And of course, do a system restore checkpoint before each driver install. Just in case.

I can't say for sure this will fix your hardware acceleration issue but it just might.

Dreadful Drivers
The flaw revolves around Nvidia graphics cards with users taking to Nvidia’s forums to report Windows Update is automatically installing new drivers which break multimonitor setups, SLI (dual card) configurations and can even stop PCs booting entirely which pushes Windows 10 into its emergency recovery mode.

I know that's about Windows 10 and a different Nvidia driver version (353.54). But just be careful. :)
