Hi, I've been using FF36.0 for a week on my WinXP system and suddenly my Bookmarks Menu began opening on the right side of the Bookmarks dropdown list instead of the left side (where had it and liked it). Now that's all backwards. I tried various Bookmarks settings and this forum's Knowledge Base postings with no 'solve'. I thought I could fix this in Bookmarks settings but was unsuccessful, no matter what I tried. The posts I've read either describe fixes for other problems or tell me to click something that doesn't exist on FF36 (or are hidden to a simple user). Anybody been here and fixed that? I'll be your best friend.  ; )) .Thanks, Joe C

Hi, it might be because you have recently added a bookmark with a very long name. You can edit the names by: Right click on the bookmark > Properties.

Alternatively, if you're using the bookmarks button, have you moved it to the left? If you need to move it, open the 3-bar menu > Customize, and you can then drag and drop it to a new location, > Exit Customize, to save.

Hope that helps.

I'm not using a button, I'm using the menu bar across the top of the Firefox screen.. I've deleted all of my bookmark links since this started but no joy. One of the things I did to try to fix this (just after I noticed it) was to click 'restore in the Bookmarks section -- I restored to the previous day before this started. Again, no joy. There's no 'Undo' button for any configuration changes and maybe there should be.  : ) If I uninstall Firefox and start fresh (losing all my bookmarks in the process) will the new install 'find' the old configuration file and waffle my 'new' install? As you might presume, I'm getting a little frustrated.

If anyone has any fixes, please understand us ;users' don't always know what everything on Firefox is called. I had MAJOR trouble figuring out the difference between the Menu bar and Bookmarks Menu (both almost similar but two completely different things).

Opening the bookmarks menu to the right side is the default. To have it open to the left you would have to add a bookmark with a very long name to the Bookmarks Menu folder to force opening to the left.

My FF Menu Bar reads from left to right File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help (I'm also using the Buttons Back extension to restore my preferred Look&Feel form the last revision(s) but I don't think this would affect the Bar order.

I've already killed off all my new bookmarks from all folders. Without Googling for The World's Longest Link Name I attempted your 'long name' fix by saving a Google.com link by editing the name to start with a '1'. I kept the https:www.Google.com, added 500 zeros behind it and saved it. Now the only way I can find it is through Bookmarks> ShowAll Bookmarks>Search by inputting '1google' and there it is, right where I saved it. I'd expect that bookmark to show up first in the Bookmarks Menu (sorting by the the Name tab) but doing a search on the l1google0000000... bookmark is the only way to get to it -- and once it's 'got' it's right in the Bookmarks Menu folder where I saved it.. Clicking the search result takes me right to Google (because the link itself wasn't changed). It's still not visible without searching for it and that's another problem. None of my other bookmarks does this.

Clearly I'm a n3vvb. The Bookmarks Menu still opens on the right,  : ( Thanks for the tip though, if I'm doing something wrong, I hope someone will post a 'fix' to get that bookmarks menu to show up on the right where it used to be. If I have to crawl in and edit every bookmark I might as well start over.

If you click the star on the Navigation toolbar then you bookmark current tab in the "Unsorted Bookmarks" folder and the star turns blue to show that

If the URL in the current tab is bookmarked and the star is highlighted blue then click this highlighted star or use "Bookmark This Page/Edit This Bookmark" (Ctrl+D) to edit the properties of the bookmark like name and location and move the bookmark to another folder like the Bookmarks Toolbar folder or the Bookmarks Menu folder or remove the bookmark.

I'm not understanding something -- or a lot of somethings. My star is already solid blue. Clicking the solid blue star asks if I want to edit the Firefox Start page and I don't want to do that -- I don't want to edit any of my other links, either.

Here's the problem as I see it -- I don't know the cryptic and confusing names of every bar or spot in FF and there's no labels (aka streetsigns) that appear if you hover over them. If I don't know where you helpful folks are pointing me to, we might as well call every bar the 'Gotcha' bar. You can't lead a blind man if he can't find whereyou want him to go. You wanted me to look on the Navigation Bar but I call it the Search Bar. There's no blue star anywhere to be found.

So I clicked the Hamburger>customize and found a Bookmarks button, so I popped it on (the menu bar ??) It looks alike a piece of lined paper and on it there's a View Sidebar option. Now my bookmarks folders are showing on the left like they do in Winddows Explorer format. It's where I'd want it but clicking on any of them opens them on the left (where I want it) but clicking on any bookmark opens them up on the right -- which is what I DON'T want. It also disappears when I need to reclaim the space it takes up and I have to clicked on the Lines Paper button to get it back. Sorry, that's just too inconvenient. Grrrrr. I'm really tempted to give up the idea of getting FF back to the way I had it and just import all my bookmarks to Chrome and adopting a whole new learning curve. I'm very rapidly tiring of my Firefox and thinking about shooting it in the head.to end MY misery. One bullet is all I'll need. Please, please please, SOMEBODY STOP ME !!!!!1!!

The search bar is the name of that bar positioned next to the location/address bar. The toolbar where these items are placed on is named the Navigation Toolbar.

The combined star to bookmark the current tab and 'show your bookmarks' button next to it are usually positioned on the Navigation Toolbar. If they were in the Customize palette then you may have moved them there by accident via the right-click context menu.

If you right-click a toolbar item in normal (non-customize) mode then you can remove this item from the toolbar.

  • "Remove from Toolbar" will remove this item from the Navigation Toolbar and moves it to the Customize palette ("3-bar" Firefox menu button > Customize)
  • "Move to Menu" will move this item to the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list
  • "Move to Toolbar" in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list will move this item to the toolbar

You are talking about the bookmarks sidebar (tap the Alt key or press F10 > View > Sidebars). You can also toggle this sidebar on/off via the Ctrl+B keyboard shortcut. There is a Sidebars (tooltip: "Show Sidebars") toolbar button in the Customize palette that you can drag on a toolbar that allows to toggle available sidebars on/off.

Bookmarks only open in the sidebar if you tick the box to do this. Opening in the sidebar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website. You can check the properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the sidebar (Ctrl+B; Command+B on Mac). In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right and look at "Load this bookmark in the sidebar".

O. M. G. THANK YOU for the phenomenal amount of time and work it took to type up your reply. to me. I've printed it out so I won't get lost while I'm trying things Does Firefox have an Undo Last Change button in case I misconfigure and waffle my entire browser? LOL It's been done before. Okay, let me read this (MORE THAN twice) before I plunge in. (I'm thinking a A trail of breadcrumbs may help.) Wish me luck. And thanks again, Joe C
