When i click somewhere ( not only a link, it can be any random place within the window area ) on firefox , a new tab opens up and it loads the page http://www.mozook.com/gumgum.aspx?ref=p152&SourceId=355&CreativeId=17674606&LineItemId=5426976&PublisherId=700634&SectionId=161805024&ymid=000077ac7d6d45e2348e99804be1de36ded6e or some other mozook.com page. But this doesn't happen every time i click. it happens randomly. This should be some malware thing that uses a hook. This didnt happen when i am using any other browser. Firefox version : 16.0.2

p.s. This even happens while i am typing this and trying to select the next Text-Area with the mouse for typing.

Hi,

You can check the defaults and searchplugins folders in the [Firefox installation folder. Ideally the defaults folder would be having a folder named pref with a single file - channel-prefs. The searchplugins folder would be having files for amazondotcom, bing, eBay, google, twitter, wikipedia and yahoo. If there are any extras and you didn't knowingly create/install them, you can delete them and also check if they reappear.

Next reset Firefox.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

If the problem persists, you can Start Task Manager (right-click the Windows Taskbar) > Processes > Show processes from all users and look for suspicious or unknown entries under Image Name. You can then post in security forums or search online for the real programs behind any suspicious/unknown entries. Then try uninstalling the external Windows program behind the suspicious name via Windows Start menu, or Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features, or at least make settings changes in the external Windows program (if it's an unavoidable game, utility etc.), and then restart or reset Firefox after also checking the defaults folder.

If the Image Name has a service associated with it (right-click > Go to Service(s)), you can also try disabling or stopping it instead of uninstalling, and then restart or reset Firefox after checking the defaults folder.

If you remember giving permissions to a Windows program to install extras into Firefox and/or browsers etc., you can try to change the settings in the external Windows program, or disable/uninstall it - please note that the exact name of the program may not in every case correspond exactly to the issue at hand. In this case also you may have to restart or reset Firefox after checking the defaults folder.

If the problem goes away momentarily but returns after a user logon or computer reboot then you may also have to check Windows startup/logon programs or entries related to suspicious external Windows program/entry and deal with it accordingly. You can then restart or reset Firefox after checking the defaults folder and check.

The Windows OS support and the dedicated security forums would be helpful in all these situations.

In case problems continue to exist after best efforts you may also want to take into account stealthy programs that can hide itself from Windows Task Manager, Windows Explorer file manager, Windows Registry, and also from other Windows tools/utilities/programs/security software etc. These dedicated security forums would also be helpful:
