Most of my active folders have suddenly disappeared from their normal display position below "Inbox" -- how can I restore them and access the messages in each?
It appears that messages are still in the system, because I can access them through the search feature.

If you are using an imap mail account, I would check to see if those folders have been subscribed to be seen. File > Subscribe.
I would also check that all folders are being shown. Menu icon > Folders > All
