After about 5 minutes of being on my browser---firefox and being on a web site, my firefox looks up for about 2-3 minutes. After that time, it resumes normal operation with the web sites I view. What is happening? Can someone help? Thank you.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options)
key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Having more than one version of a program may cause issues. You must remove the older programs. Then get the current full installer.

Flash: Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac

Then reinstall the latest version.

Note: Windows users should download the active_x for Internet Explorer. and the plugin for Plugin-based browsers (like Firefox).

Note: Windows 8 and Windows 10 have built-in flash players and Adobe will cause a conflict. Install the plugin only. Not the active_x.

FredMcD, thank you for your reply. I will try your suggestions. But, I did try and remove the old version of Flash, but Flash would not allow it, without removing the new version also. Got concerned about not being able to restore the new version once it was removed. But, I will try starting in safe mode first, and see what effect that has. Being it temporarily removes all plug-ins and add-ons, Flash will not be an issue in that mode. I will get back to you. Thank you, FredMcD.

cor-el, thank you for your reply. The uninstall tool will not work. When I try to apply it, it asks to close all browsers, which I do, both firefox and I.E. both. But, I keep getting the message I.E. needs to be closed even though it is closed. Why is this happening, when BOTH browsers ARE closed? It seems until that is resolved I can not use the uninstall tool. Can you explain? I want to remove both versions of flash, and then reinstall the latest version again. But the uninstaller doesn't seem to be working properly? Thank you.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that works better.

cor-el, thank you for reply. Are you advocating using windows safe mode so as to be able to uninstall flash? Or is it another reason, pertaining to my web site look up issue? If it is to try and uninstall flash, fine. Can you please explain. Thank you.

If something is preventing the uninstall, safe mode should allow it.

FredMcD, thank you for your reply. I was finally able to uninstall flash, and reinstall the latest version. So far, the jury is out concerning running in safe mode with firefox, and it eliminating the look up problem. When I have more definitive info, I will let you know. Just want to make sure if in fact running in safe mode helps or not. I'm leaning towards it not helping as of now. But, I will try and make sure. Thank you.

Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes). If the problem goes away, that tells us one thing. If it does not, that tells us something else.

Try Firefox normal. Is the problem still there?

Hi FredMcD, sorry it took so long for me to reply, but frankly I am having trouble seeing if running in safe mode AND resetting firefox has made any difference. I don't believe it has, but just not really sure. What is strange, this only really happens about 5 minutes AFTER I turn my computer on, and start navigating the web on various sites. The problem doesn't seem to be a problem there after. Strange? Or is it? If in fact, running in safe mode and resetting firefox doesn't solve the problem, what do you suggest next? I ask that question and wonder if I try the next step, what effect that may have on the problem? I don't mind experimenting so long as I don't screw things up with my system. And, the instructions I can understand, bearing in mind I'm not a computer genius. What suggestions or opinions do you have FredMcD? Thank you.

It's hard to fix a problem when we don't know the cause. If it comes back, we'll try something else.
