Can only receive messages immediately after start up
Upon starting my Thunderbird client, it goes out and pulls in email. After that, nothing I do makes it receive emails. Clicking the "Get Messages" button does not work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the application. I've rebooted. Nothing allows me to receive emails except closing the client and reopening it again.

It would have helped if you had mentioned your email provider. However, from your problem description it sounds like it's GoDaddy.
There are a number of people who complained about not getting new messages via GoDaddy IMAP recently, unless Thunderbird is restarted. Check with GoDaddy if they have problems. Assuming there is a GoDaddy support forum, check whether other users have the same problem.
