Fix passkey setup problems

“Your browser or device doesn't support passkeys.” / “Passkeys aren’t supported here” / "Passkey setup isn't available with this device. Try another method or device."

This message appears when your browser or device can't create passkeys.

  • Update your browser to the latest version.
  • Try a different device.

“Passkey setup failed or is unavailable”

This can happen if you cancelled the browser prompt, setup was interrupted, or your browser can't access your device's authenticator.

  1. Try creating the passkey again, and complete the browser prompt without cancelling.
  2. Make sure your device supports passkeys and that any required authentication methods are configured.
  3. Check that your browser allows access to your authenticator.
  4. If you’re using a security key, reconnect it and try again.

“Passkey setup couldn’t be completed. Try a different method or device”

Firefox was unable to create a passkey using the selected authenticator. Try the following:

  • Try creating the passkey again.
  • Use a different device or authenticator.
  • Make sure your browser and operating system are up to date.

If the problem continues, try another sign-in method and attempt passkey setup later.

“Passkey setup was canceled”

This can happen if the browser prompt was dismissed before finishing setup, or if you took too long to respond.

  1. Start the passkey setup again.
  2. Complete the browser prompt without closing or canceling it.

"Passkey setup isn't available with this device. Either the device has already been registered or the setup process was cancelled."

You may have cancelled the browser prompt, or you're trying to register a device that already has a passkey on your account.

  • If you cancelled, start setup again and complete the browser prompt.
  • If the device already has a passkey, use it to sign in instead, or add a passkey from a different device.

“This passkey is already registered./Passkey already registered”

You’re trying to add a passkey that already exists on your account.

  • Use the existing passkey to sign in, or
  • Create a passkey on a different device or security key

"Passkey setup failed."

An unexpected error occurred during setup.

  • Try creating the passkey again.
  • If the problem continues:
    • Restart your browser and try again;
    • Try a different device, or
    • Contact Mozilla support.

“Passkeys can’t be set up on this page”

This usually means you’re not on the correct secure page.

  1. Go directly to https://accounts.firefox.com.
  2. Avoid using embedded pages or in-app browsers.
  3. Try again from the main site.

“We couldn’t access the authenticator. Try again or use another sign-in method.”

Your device or security key may not be available.

  1. Reconnect your security key if you’re using one.
  2. Make sure your device’s screen lock is enabled.
  3. Try again.

“You've used all 10 passkeys. Delete a passkey to create a new one.”

You've reached the maximum number of passkeys allowed on your Mozilla account.

  • Delete a passkey you no longer use.
  • Try creating the new passkey again.

Fix passkey sign-in problems

“Sign in with passkey failed or is unavailable. Try again or choose another method.”

This can happen if verification fails or no passkey is found.

  1. Try signing in again.
  2. Make sure you’re using the device that has your passkey.
  3. Alternatively, sign in using your password, linked Google or Apple account, or a verification code sent to your email code.

“Passkey request timed out. Please try again.”

You may have waited too long to respond.

  1. Start the sign-in process again.
  2. Respond to the browser prompt right away.

“Your browser or device doesn’t support passkeys.”

Your browser may not support passkey sign-in.

  1. Update your browser.
  2. Try signing in on another device that supports passkeys.
  3. Or sign in using your password, linked Google or Apple account, or a verification code sent to your email code to sign in.

“Passkey setup isn’t available with this device. Please try again or choose another method”

Firefox could not use the selected device for passkey authentication. Try the following:

  • Start the sign-in process again
  • Use a different device or authenticator
  • Choose another available sign-in method

“Passkeys can’t be used on this page. Check you’re on the correct secure site and try again”

You may be on the wrong site or an insecure page.

  1. Go to https://accounts.firefox.com.
  2. Make sure the page is secure (look for the lock icon).
    firefoxconnectionsecure
  3. Try again.

“Something went wrong with your passkey. Try again or use another sign-in method.”

An unexpected error occurred during sign-in.

  1. Try signing in again.
  2. If the problem continues:
    • Sign in using your password, linked Google or Apple account, or a verification code sent to your email address.
    • Go to Settings > Security > Passkeys.
    • Delete the passkey and create a new one

“We couldn’t access the authenticator. Try again or use another sign-in method.”

Your security key or device may have disconnected.

  1. Reconnect your security key.
  2. Make sure your device is unlocked.
  3. Try again.

Fix server-side passkey errors

Some passkey errors occur after Firefox successfully communicates with your browser or authenticator but encounters a problem processing the request.

“Passkey not recognized. Use another sign-in method.”

The passkey you selected is no longer associated with your Mozilla account. This can happen if:

  • The passkey was deleted from your account.
  • The passkey was replaced with a newer credential.
  • The Mozilla account associated with the passkey was removed or recreated.

To regain access:

  • Sign in using another available sign-in method.
  • Create a new passkey for your Mozilla account.
Note: Consider removing the unrecognized passkey from your device, browser, password manager, or security key. Since it is no longer associated with your Mozilla account, it will not work for future sign-ins and may continue to appear as a suggested passkey until you remove it.

“Passkey limit reached.”

Your Mozilla account has reached the maximum number of passkeys allowed. Delete a passkey you no longer use and then try creating a new one. See:

  1. Open Settings > Security > Passkeys.
  2. Remove an unused passkey.
  3. Create the new passkey again.

“Passkey authentication failed”

Firefox was unable to verify the passkey response. Try the following:

  • Sign in again.
  • Use a different passkey if available.
  • Use another sign-in method.
  • Retry later.

If the problem continues, remove the passkey and create a new one.

“Passkey registration failed.”

Firefox could not complete passkey registration. Try again later. If the problem continues:

  • Restart your browser.
  • Try another device or authenticator.
  • Use another sign-in method until the issue is resolved.

“You've tried too many times. Try again later.”

Too many passkey attempts were made in a short period of time. Wait a while before trying again.

“Invalid token.”

Your sign-in session may have expired. Try the following:

  1. Return to the Mozilla account sign-in page.
  2. Start the sign-in process again.
  3. Complete the sign-in flow without leaving the page open for an extended period.

“The request was blocked for security reasons.”

Mozilla detected activity that could not be verified and blocked the request. Try again later. If the problem continues:

  • Disable any VPN or proxy temporarily.
  • Try a different network.
  • Use another sign-in method.

“Unexpected error.”

An unexpected problem occurred while processing the request. Try the following:

  • Refresh the page.
  • Sign in again.
  • Try again later.

If the issue persists, contact Mozilla Support.

Fix other common issues

Firefox Sync asks for a password after using a passkey

This is expected. Firefox Sync requires your password to protect your encrypted data. Enter your password when prompted to continue.

I deleted my only passkey and can’t sign in

  1. Go to https://accounts.firefox.com.
  2. Sign in using another sign-in method:
    • Password
    • Linked account (Google/Apple)
    • A verification code sent to your email address (if neither the password nor the linked account has ever been set up)
  3. Open Settings > Security > Passkeys.
  4. Create a new passkey.

I can’t delete a passkey

  1. Wait a few minutes and try again.
  2. Sign out of your Mozilla account.
  3. Sign back in and try again.

A service requires two-step authentication

Some services (like Firefox Add-ons Developer Hub) require a two-step authentication method to be set up. You may be prompted to set this up directly in the sign-in flow, or you may enable two-step authentication from your account settings:

  1. Go to Settings > Security.
  2. Follow the steps to Set up two-factor authentication on your account.
  3. Try accessing the service again.

Adding two-step authentication secures all your account sign-in methods, including sign-in with password and linked account (Google/Apple).

A passkey was added to my account, but I didn’t request this

If you received an email about changes to your passkeys that you did not initiate, your account may be compromised. Review your security settings immediately. We recommend:

  • Changing your password
  • Reviewing and deleting any unrecognized passkeys
  • Reviewing the linked accounts (google/apple accounts)
