Hi, I've received the email below from Microsoft today.

I have 15 email accounts linked to Thunderbird mail and use up to 5 of them daily. Sometimes 'instant' communications on one or more of my accounts can be important.

Will Thunderbird mail still function in the same way from 16th September?

I apologise if this question has been answered somewhere else. I searched but could not find it.

"The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?

If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?

Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods."

I'm trying to migrate from Fairpoint to Breezeline as my provider. I need two email accounts, one for work and one for personal. I got a new work account "sort of" working. I can send and receive email with it, but it doesn't react when I click on "Get messages." The second account I can't get to work at all. I copied the same server settings I used for the first account, obtained from the Breezeline website. They are:

Username: Name@breezeline.net

Incoming mail server: mail.breezeline.net IMAP port 993 Security type SSL

Outgoing mail server: mail.breezeline.net Port #465 Security type SSL

Authentication method: Normal password

I used the same password for both accounts.

When I tried to get messages or send on the second account, the message is "Login to server mail.breezeline.net failed."

I checked the Breezeline webmail site. It recognizes Account 1 but "cannot find" Account 2. According to the Breezeline website, I can have more than one account.

Please help! THANK YOU!

I have received an email from Microsoft informing me of changes to its authentification procedure. As from Sept, to continue using Thunderbird to access my outlook/hotmail accounts, I have to change the authentification method to Oauth2. The reasons and changes required are detailed here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/microsoft-oauth-authentication-and-thunderbird-202 I have 2 problems. 1. imap-mail.outlook.com - I can change my authentification method to Oauth2. However, when I then try to access my mail via TB, I get an error stating that the server imap-mail.outlook.com does not support the authentification method! (see image) 2. Outgoing Server SMTP There is no Oauth2 option available to choose!

Can anyone help? I am using the most up to date version of Thunderbird 115.12.2 (64-bit).

I have a new windows 10 machine and have a new install of Thunderbird. Hosting email server has 2966 emails that I would like to recover. Started process of downloading them and got to 1895 when it failed with the error message "Unable to write email to mailbox" Check the settings. Tried removing the account and recreating it. Removed the 1895 emails that I have downloaded and got the same result. It seems to be broken some where between Thunderbird and the hosting mailserver as I can login via webmail and see and read the balance of 1071 emails. Techs at the hosting server company have no idea what could be causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Richard

System specs below. Thunderbird is set with 1 account: A paid Yahoo email, with a LOT of messages (well over 36K), using IMAP (Yahoo only lets the most recent 10K come down via IMAP, sadly). Most emails do download and are correctly rendered. But around 10%, starting usually a month or so back from the high water mark of last update, show email source code (text of headers, mimeparts, etc.) for a totally different email than the one highlighted (a few days later, different sender, etc.) Checking the message on Yahoo, it renders correctly. There is no pattern to the corrupted messages: they can be from mailing lists, company marketing mails, an alert from my local town, whatever.

Once the error occurs, it is consistent across Thunderbird shut-and-restarts (still showing same wrong email source as before). Emails to either side (earlier and later) render properly in the message pane.

Double Clicking the message to it's own child pane renders a pane with Subject and From as blank, and the same email source text for a different email. Forwarding the email puts the email source code in as text (I was hoping the act of refreshing and reformatting might grab the correct content, but no).

Doing a Repair Mailbox (which seems to mean "download headers again, then download all the mail again" does seem to correct for a time (including the previously corrupted emails now rendering correctly)... but within a day or two, a new crop of messages will be corrupted, and the dance starts again.

Windows 10, 64 bit. Norton 360 set to exclude all mailbox directories. Thunderbird 115.12.2 (64-bit), though this has been happening since 110. No plugins, no extensions.

Are there diagnostic logs or other info I can share that can help us figure this out? I really like Thunderbird, but it's just unusable here. Outlook, Apple mail, other tools don't seem to have this problem.

I use Thunderbird 115.12.2 (64-bit) with Hotmail, using a local account on Windows 10. Microsoft is introducing 'modern authentication' on Hotmail, and I want to be ready for this, but I cannot follow the guidance at https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/modern-authentication-methods-now-needed-to-continue-syncing-outlook-email-in-non-microsoft-email-apps-c5d65390-9676-4763-b41f-d7986499a90d

If I try to alter my existing Thunderbird Account Settings for my Hotmail account, the authentication method for Outgoing Server (SMTP) is shown as Normal Password but there is no option to change it to OAuth2. If I delete and recreate my Hotmail account in Thunderbird, I get an error message from Microsoft saying that I cannot log in because my browser is not set to allow cookies -- even though I believe I have set both Thunderbird and Firefox (my default browser) to allow cookies.

In Thunderbird, I would like to use Cards View, and sort each folder in my email account according to desired 'Sort by' settings (namely, sort by date in descending order and use the 'unthreaded' option).

I cannot locate a setting or an option to apply the desired sort settings to all folders in my account. Rather, it appears I must manually apply these settings to each folder, which is tedious given I have a large number of sub-folders in my inbox folder.

Is there a way to apply the settings for one folder to all others, or to change the default settings for each (existing) folder?

I am having trouble manually configuring an AOL email account (username@verizon.net). AOL's instructions say to manually configure the account. I tried to do that twice, once with IMAP and the other with POP.

Now, I have two email folders in Thunderbird that I cannot use. They are both empty because I get a message box that says "Login to server imap.aol.com with username@verizon.net failed." when I try to use them. When I use the same login credentials to login to the website mail.aol.com, they work.

I have to contact AOL as to why when I try to access the account with an email client (Thunderbird and Outlook) I'm getting password errors. In the meantime, how do I delete the two email folders created incorrectly in Thunderbird?

Thanks for your help.

I've been using Thunderbird for my hotmail.com and cox.net accounts for many years. Recently cox transitioned to yahoo.com with their email and users had to transition over. I was able to do this for 5 accounts - no problem. My hotmail.com was a bit more of a challenge but I was able to get it to work. Last week I started getting sign-in errors. Nothing worked and I deleted my hotmail.com address in Thunderbird figuring it would be better to just start over - wrong choice. Now I cannot even install my hotmail.com account on my Thunderbird.

I first tried the straightforward approach. Get an app password from my Microsoft account. Nest I it account actions, add email account. I added my name, email address and app password. When I hit ok a message quickly flashed saying configuration doesn't work. When I done I get a message that server already exists. I tried going to manual configuration and changed to normal password but got the message again that server exists. I went to the Outgoing server (SMTP) list but the outlook server doesn't show up.I tried using the hotmail password instead og the app password with same results. Finally I logged out of Thunderbird, turned off the two party requirement in Outlook and again tried to add the account to Thunderbird. Now I get the message 'could not get issuer fot oauth2 authentication'. I next went into manual configuration, turned authentication to 'normal password' the the hotmail account installed.

I closed Thunderbird and started again. sent a message to the hotmail account and had to reenter the password - works. Tried to send a message and was asked againgn for the app password - then it works. So all is good except when I check the server settings for smtp and IMAP, ot shows 'normal password' After strugglig for two hours I do not want to risk changing them to oauth2. Checked under 'saved logins' and the app password is shown. Is it likely that I have arrived at a stable solution? What am I risking by having the 'normal password' authentication?

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have just migrated Thunderbird to my new CUBI desktop running Windows 11. I get security errors when I launch Thunderbird. My email provider The Messaging Company advised me to change server settings, which are now shown in the Troubleshooting Information page as account1 (pop3) pop.themessagingco.com.au:995 SSL/TLS Normal password smtp.themessagingco.com.au:587 STARTTLS Normal password true.

On launching Thunderbird I get the message Secure connection failed live.mozillamessaging.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate has expired. Error code: <a id="errorCode" title="SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_ISSUER_CERTIFICATE">SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_ISSUER_CERTIFICATE</a>

This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.

Or you can add an exception…

AND when I attempt to send an email I get warning that the SMTP server does not have a valid certificate. If I ask, in either case, to "Get Certificate" the response is that the site attempts to identify itself with invalid information.

I have "tried again later" over two weeks, and nothing has changed.

The Messaging Company is a fairly large email provider: it seems strange that its security is incomplete. However, I am not happy to just set an exception and over-ride these errors without doing all I can to check that there is not something screwy going on. I really value using Thunderbird, and The Messaging Company's advice that I should just use webmail is not at all satisfactory: I keep everything on my computer or backed up to a portable drive here.

Please: is there anything I can do or should know to fix this problem?

Best Regards, Margaret Mackisack

I'm a writer. In keeping with the Law of Primacy, my first work is usually my best work (after a few tweaks). I recently had to write an email response to someone for the Darling Bride and me.

I waxed poetic and wrote an incredibly diplomatic response to a most unpleasant situation. After completing the entire message down to our signatures, I selected "File" and "Save" to make sure it was all saved in the Drafts folder. That way, I could open it on another device and read the draft to her.

Imagine my shock when I opened it, only to find that the draft stopped in the middle of a word - while I was correcting a typo - and didn't save anything after that! Frantic, I went back to the computer I used to write it, hoping the entire email was at least saved locally. Nope! The draft stopped in the middle of the message, even though I had saved the entire thing.

Perhaps this isn't high priority for a lot of users... but for those few of us, it's a critical, fatal flaw that has to be resolved. I can't even imagine that I did anything wrong: I saved the message before exiting; and opened to find half of it missing. I love the idea of Thunderbird and its privacy features, compared with the data-mining big names. But I can't afford to lose data! This was a personal response, thankfully, and not related to my work as a writer and author. However, I have to trust my email client with the data I save to it. Any hints to prevent this are greatly appreciated.
