After MS automatic updates (Win 7 64bit) on Tuesday night 8/13 FF 22.0 started to crash randomly, but on average every five minutes. I updated FF to 23.0 but this did not stop the problem. What to do?

Hi rebadurchee2,
Sorry you are having problems.

Had an MS update crashed all Firefox users it should have been an unmissable event picked up in this forum, input, telemetry & crash stats. You could consider trying to remove the MS updates even if only as a temporary test just to prove that was the cause for you rather than it just being a coincidence.

There are some things you may do to reduce the likelihood of crashes such as updating any Firefox extensions & your plugins. You should also try Firefox in a new additional clean profile & Firefox's safemode with all plugins disabled.

To diagnose the crash we need a couple of Crash IDs from the present crash and a couple from a crash in safe mode and the clean profile. These may be obtained by navigating to about:crashes Submitted Crash IDs start bp-
(Form bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxnnnnnnn example bp-1dd01f44-afd2-4fcd-aa5e-a36bf2130604 note the forum displays them as links after they are posted)

First of all you marked the problem "solved." It isn't solved at all. Far from it. You may try to boost your "solved" stats this way but is very dishonest. Rather than try to actually help, you simply throw a huge amount of boilerplate at me. Given your dishonesty and contempt for the customer It is far easier for me to switch browsers, which is what I will do.

Hi again rebadurchee2,
sorry that you feel that way.

I had no reason to; and did not mark the problem solved.
Only two categories of people can do that Mods/Admins and You (the Original Poster). In all probability you inadvertently clicked the wrong email link.

If you are not prepared to make an effort in troubleshooting your own problems, and providing the necessary information there is very little we can do to help you.

The boilerplate is intended to be helpful, and is way easier than having to type and construct such information in full. The forum would not be able to answer as many questions without such assets. The articles are carefully thought out and made easily readable complete in most cases with helpful screenshots. Also although these threads may be answering only a single persons question, some of them may be read by thousands of others so adding additional information may help others.

See also this boilerplate

Good luck with the new browser.

Thank you for your response. That is more than most support sites do. I do note that you did not mark my problem solved. I understand your snark, since I dispensed some of that myself; my apologies.

Part of my frustration was having to get a whole new profile on the forum since I couldn't sign on or successfully change my password -- no matter how many times I changed it and used the link to reset, my password was not accepted. And I am having video problems with this site, with pages showing up blank and then text suddenly appearing.

I've been using FF since v1.0. I am starting the process of disabling all add-ins and will follow the steps you outlined in my unfortunately characterized boilerplate. Thank you for being part of the solution.

Apologies accepted. Myself and most others on this forum are volunteers & users like yourself. We understand it is frustrating when Firefox does not work.

Your old forum profile should still be readable,

  • what is the username and can you find it ?

It should be possible to have an admin reactivate it and reset the password if that helps you.

If you try to follow the steps in my first post you may find Firefox does not crash,

  • if it does still crash,
then a couple of Cash ID s will be needed, and they will be much more useful from a clean profile with plugins disabled and operating in Firefox's safemode.
  • if it does not crash,
then we have good clues as to the probable cause.

P.S. you posted a duplicate a couple of minutes after the first so I deleted it.

It's happening on Windows 8 Pro 64 as well. My crashes started happening on... Aug 13. Anyone try rolling back that update?

You have Ghostery 5.0.1 per your system info aside. Please ensrue that is one of the extensions you update

That may not be causing your crashes but will not be helping.

nicko68,

Please read and follow the suggestions in this thread. if that fails to resolve the issue then please

  1. start your own thread
    • follow the prompts to include full troubleshooting information
  2. post back here to confirm you have started a thread so that others may follow it

I disabled Ghostery and it was stable. I reenabled Ghostery, opened a bunch of tabs and left it running for awhile. The RAM usage kept climbing even with Firefox sitting idle. I disabled Ghostery again, reran the same test and the RAM usage remained relatively constant.

So it looks like Ghostery may be the culprit. 5.0.1 is the latest released version as far as I know. So I'm leaving it disabled for the time being.

I don't know if the OP is/was running Ghostery, but my crash appears to be unrelated to the MS update. Sorry for confusing this thread, the timing made me think it was related to the Windows update as well.

There is at least one Windows update during the past few months that creates problems on pages using Flash. However, in my experience, it freezes the page rather than causing Firefox to shut down. If that matches anyone's symptoms and you have Windows Vista, 7, or 8, disable the Flash Player's protected mode. See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort" for how to: Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?

I can not say I had noticed that but yet another problem with Flash Player. Good to know disabling protected mode works.
