when I visit a web site i want firefox to ask me about saving id's and passwords after/when entering them

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
In Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode Firefox won't fill names and passwords automatically and won't offer to store new passwords.
- You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
- To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

Delete the particular web site you are interested in from your Bookmarks. Go to Firefox Preferences: Privacy: check “Clear history when Firefox closes.” Quit Firefox. Start Firefox again; uncheck “Clear history when Firefox closes.” Go to the desired web site; Bookmark it; enter your ID and password.
