Firefox for Android gives you lots of options for playing video and audio on your phone, including background playback, picture-in-picture support and auto-play settings. This article also explains what to check if a video doesn't play or a website opens videos in another app.

Picture-in-picture mode
Picture-in-picture mode lets you continue watching a video from a website while visiting other tabs. You can even continue watching the video while using other apps.
- Start the video and switch to full-screen mode.
- While the video is playing, go to your home Android home screen. The video will resize and you'll be able to view it while using other sites or apps.
Device settings: If this feature doesn't work, check your Android settings to make sure you've allowed picture-in-picture mode in Firefox.
Control video and audio autoplay
You can change Firefox settings to control whether websites can automatically play video or audio. Blocking autoplay can also reduce unwanted playback and cellular data use.
Tap this icon to change view the settings for that site. Click Block audio and video and select the option for autoplay you want to use.
You can visit Settings to change autoplay settings to Firefox for Android from automatically playing videos/audio when you visit a website. This helps you save battery life too.
- Tap the three-dot
menu button.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down to Privacy & security, then tap Site settings.
- Tap Autoplay.
- Choose your preferred option:
- Block audio and video on cellular data only: Audio and video will still autoplay on Wi-Fi.
- Block audio only: Video will autoplay without sound.
- Block audio and video: Prevents autoplay of both audio and video.
Change autoplay settings for specific websites
You can change site permissions to allow video autoplay only in your trusted websites.
- Tap Settings.
- Scroll down to Privacy & security, then tap Site settings.
- Tap Exceptions.
- Tap the name of the website to see its current permissions and to make changes.
You can also change permissions for the website you're currently viewing from the site controls in the toolbar, if the permission is available there.
Changes you make for an individual website can override your general autoplay setting for that site.
Listen to videos in the background
If you minimize Firefox while playing video/audio, it will continue to play in the background, so you can multitask on your phone.
Background playback can also depend on the website. Some websites or media players may pause playback when Firefox moves to the background.
Control media playback through your notifications panel
When you play a video or audio, controls will appear in your notifications panel so you can control playback there, without having to open Firefox.
If the controls don't appear, make sure Android allows Firefox to display the relevant notifications and that media is actively playing.
See and stop noisy tabs
Your Open Tabs section in the Firefox for Android home screen will show you whether or not any tabs are playing audio or video, along with a pause button, so you can stop playing it without opening the page.
Troubleshoot video and audio playback
A video or audio file doesn't play
If media doesn't play on a website:
- Reload the page and try playing the video or audio again.
- Check that your device has an active internet connection.
- Check the website's permissions and make sure autoplay or other required permissions aren't blocked.
- If the website uses DRM-protected content, make sure Firefox and the website support the content you're trying to play.
- Update Firefox for Android to the latest version.
- If the problem happens on only one website, the issue may be with that site's media player or content rather than Firefox.
DRM-protected services may have their own device, account, subscription, or regional requirements.
Autoplay doesn't work as expected
If a website starts playing media when you expect it to be blocked, or media doesn't start when you expect it to play:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & security > Site settings > Autoplay and check your general autoplay setting.
- Check whether you've created an exception for that website.
- Reload the website after changing its autoplay permission.
Some websites may require you to tap or otherwise interact with the page before any media can play. Changing Firefox's autoplay permission doesn't guarantee that a website will automatically start its media.
Picture-in-picture or background playback stops
Android can restrict apps that run in the background to save battery or data. If playback stops when you leave Firefox:
- Check your Android battery settings for Firefox. Battery Saver or app-specific battery restrictions may limit background activity.
- Check whether Data Saver or other data restrictions are limiting Firefox's background network access.
- Make sure picture-in-picture is allowed for Firefox if you're trying to continue watching a video in a floating window.
- Try another website. Some websites intentionally pause their media when you leave the page or app.
Android setting names and paths vary by device manufacturer and Android version.
A website opens videos in another app
Some websites can open video links in an installed media or streaming app instead of playing them in Firefox. This behavior can depend on the website, Android's link settings and the apps installed on your device.
If you want a link to remain in Firefox:
- Check whether the website offers an option to continue in the browser.
- Check your Android settings for the app that opens automatically and review its default link settings.
- Return to Firefox and try opening the page again.
Changing an external app's default link behavior is an Android setting, not a Firefox autoplay setting.
