Over time I have accumulated several address books and sub address books in Thunderbird. I would like to consolidate to one address book. But I am not sure which is the official address book. How to do?

I don't know what's your criteria for 'real' address book. The one which are built-in to Thunderbird, and which cannot be deleted are the Personal Address Book, and Collected Addresses.
