What do I use Firefox for , on my home PC Windows. How is it useful to use, and what does it do. If I don't use it, should I remove the program ?

Firefox is an alternate web browser. Windows comes by default with Internet Explorer as the web browser (the program you use to go to websites such as Google, Facebook, etc.).

Since you are using Windows XP, the latest version of Internet Explorer you can use is IE8. If you update your Firefox to version 10 (see Updating Firefox ), Firefox is faster, more reliable, and more secure than IE8. It is a matter of personal preference though. Give Firefox a try (make sure you update first, the version you have is very out of date). Which ever one you like, use.

Obviously having programs installed is going to take up a bit of hard drive space. However, hard drive space usage doens't slow Windows down, it is how many programs you have open that can slow Windows down. On my computer, firefox takes up only 36Mb of disk space.

Java is a plugin for browsers that allows you to view and use Java applications on the internet.

You can leave the Java plugin disabled in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and only enable it on trusted sites if you see a message that Java is disabled or know that a Java applet is used.
