How do I recuperate old emails

Yeremi Castillo

I swap computers about 3 times in year, and not all of mine emails seen to have transfer. I was wondering if there is any way I could potentially recuperate those emails.

Not sure what OS you are using and not sure what you are copying between computers.

So this is some info on the entire process I would recommend using when wanting to move from one computer to another.

To ensure your profile and mail accounts contain all data: (Not a real concern if you use IMAP as emails are stored on server and can be downloaded again)

But to make sure all is download do this:

  • Account Settings > Synchronisation & Storage for the account
  • Select 'Keep messages in all folders......'
  • Click on 'Advanced' button
  • make sure all folders and subfolders are selected and click on OK
  • Under 'Disk Space'
  • Select 'Synchronise all messages locally regardless of age'
  • Do not select any of the other two options.

Make sure all IMAP accounts have been set up as above.

Now to check you are fully up to date: In Thunderbird

  • Enable the Menu Bar if it's not already enabled.
  • Menu app icon (3 lines) > View > Toolbars > select 'Menu Bar'
  • In Menu Bar:
  • File > Offline > Download/Synch now
  • Select 'Mail messages'
  • If required select 'Newsgroup messages'
  • click on 'Select' and make sure everything is selected and click on Ok
  • then click on 'OK' to launch the synchronise.

Once completed - info will display in bottom Status bar

Then you can Exit Thunderbird and perform the manual copy/backup of the 'Thunderbird' folder that contains everything you need to move to another folder.

If you use Windows OS I created this question:

That 'Thunderbird' folder contains everything. So on new computer: download and install Thunderbird I suggest you download from the Thunderbird website : https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/ install and let it launch so it creates a profile, then Exit Thunderbird.

Access the appropriate location where profile is stored:

So if in: C: Users/User name/Appdata/Roaming/Thunderbird Delete that 'Thunderbird' folder then paste the copied/backed up 'Thunderbird' folder into the 'Roaming' folder. Start Thunderbird

re :not all of mine emails seen to have transfer

Are you talking about emails in an imap or pop account ? Are you talking about emails you store in 'Local Folders' ?

If imap and it seems to be emails in a particular folder which is missing: Check to see if you need to 'Subscribe' to see the missing folder.

Also check:

  • Via Menu Bar
  • View > Folders' > select 'All'
  • View > Threads > select 'All'

What exactly is not being shown? eg: emails prior to a date or they only show unread mail

Check to see if you have enabled a filter.

  • Click on 'Quick Filter' button
  • Are any of the icons (including the pin icon) showing a colour/enabled :
  • if yes, click on icon to switch it off.

Maybe you have some emails which you have marked as 'ignored thread': To check this:

  • View > Threads > select 'All' - leave this selected

But also select 'Ignored Threads' It will reveal any email set up as an ignored thread: Info:
