Migrated my data from old MacBook to new MacBook, and got a message of a damaged Thunderbird app. Deleted the app. Thus, I cannot retrieve personal data on my old Mac. I do have a gmail account, but my preference always has ben to use Thunderbird. How do I proceed?

If there was an error in thunderbird, you should be able to download and install over it. Or am I not understanding the issue?

re : and got a message of a damaged Thunderbird app. Deleted the app.

If you have completely removed the Thunderbird program then I suggest you get a fresh installation,

1. Check the 'Local' is the language you require. 2. Check the 'Release Channel' is the one you want.

  • The official 'Thunderbird Release' channel.

This release is intended for users who want all available new features and bug fixes on a monthly basis. May not work with all add-ons.

  • The official 'Thunderbird Extended Support Release' channel.

This release is intended for users who want all available new features on an annual basis and stability/security fixes on a monthly basis. May not work with all add-ons.

3. Check the 'Operating System' is the correct one. Select 'macOS'

click on 'Download'

re : I do have a gmail account,

If the old migrated profile is not accessible or deleted by you. It's possible your old mac was using a a different version of Thunderbird. You did not mention what version you were using on the old mac.

No worries, you just create a new gmail imap account and it will show everything that is lurking on the server - as viewed via webmail account. As you mention gmail, I suggest you check a few things first and then proceed to create the mail account.

Check this:

Firewall: Make sure Thunderbird program is set up as an allowed program

VPN: Gmail does not like VPN, so check computer and switch it off. Some Anti-Virus apps auto provide and enable VPNs.

Localhost: Some people use programs like 'Apache' to eg: maintain websites. It's important to switch those programs off until Oauth2 token has been set up.

In Thunderbird check this:

  • Settings > Privacy & Security
  • select 'Accept cookies from sites'
  • click on 'Exceptions' button
  • Enter : https://accounts.google.com
  • click on 'Allow'
  • click on 'Save Changes'

Then whilst in 'Privacy & Security' section

  • check the 'Passwords' section
  • Click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • if you see any mention of gmail possibly from a previous install then remove all lines to do with gmail.

Create the mail account

  • Menu app icon > New Account > Email
  • Enter name, email address and password

Password is the same password you use to access webmail account

  • Remember password' should be selected
  • click on Continue

By default Thunderbird will look for the IMAP settings.

You will then get a prompt by google to enter email address and password because gmail is checking you really are you , then you say to allow Thunderbird access to server.

Gmail sets up an Oauth token which gets saved in same are as passwords. Thunderbird then uses that token to access server.
