Hi,
Sorry for the inconvenience. The team is working on implementing a modern embedded search UI for the New Tab.
It was decided to remove the legacy code to clean up space for the new one, but that decision was canceled due to accessibility reasons. You can expect the legacy UI to (temporarily) return in the nearest future.

It was decided to remove the legacy code - I assume the legacy code you refer to is the code that allows you to use the search box for internet searches? that decision was canceled - if this code was not removed why does it not work as it did? You can expect the legacy UI to (temporarily) return in the nearest future. - does that mean you are going to put it back and then take it away again? And what the heck is the nearest future?

- I'm a volunteer, not a developer.
- The search box UI hasn't been updated for a very long time, that's why it's legacy. The idea now is to turn it into a built-in widget that another team can update and maintain (to avoid a situation similar to what we have now).
- The code was removed, and only then the decision was cancelled (for some accessibility reasons).
- "The nearest future" should be the next dot release, but there are no guarantees at the moment.
- The legacy UI should be preserved until the new one lands, so the option to search in that bar should persist (once re-added).
