Desktop Computer. Still on Windows 10.

Not sure of category. This began when I launched the computer today. I opened Firefox and got the message "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional because ....."

When I started to shut down the computer (first mentioned step here) I saw there's a Window update. I selected Update and Restart. That went okay, but still don't have my Firefox bookmarks.

So I clicked on Learn more. I found the Firefox > Profiles folder. There are two folders, one from today - qkuxm6ws.default-release - 15...... 0196 with 94 items, and 7ghfiw 15.default, from Jan 5, 2021, with 3 items. I assume I should use the one with today's date.

BUT .... from this point, the information on this website was full of information - NOT step-by-step information telling me what to do with which files in this folder.

Also, I have McAfee as well as Windows Defender. I opened Windows Defender Firewall. State is On. Notification state: Notify me when Windows Defender Firewall blocks a new app. I've gotten no such messages.

Under allowed apps and features:

"Firefox ... private not checked; public checked.."
"Firefox (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox" - private is checked, public not checked.

Can't make changes.

Under Overview window: Not checked is "Inbound connections that do not match a rule are blocked."

        • In the "Monitoring\Firewall folder" - Firefox (with path) is listed twice. Both entries have Private, Allow, NO Override -
        • Differences - the first has UDP; the second has TCP. Nothing under "Group."

My last bookmarks backup was Jan 2025. 😕 😟

I don't know where else to look or what to do. Please help. Kami

Hi Kami,

Please see Fix "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message and Recover lost or missing Bookmarks.

  1. Did the "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional" error message go away after going through the steps from the first article?
  2. If so, were you able to recover your bookmarks following the steps from the second article?

I said in my message that I immediately went to that page, and describe how far I got. It's from there that I checked the Firewall (Win Defender).

To repeat: I clicked on Learn more. I found the Firefox > Profiles folder. There are two folders, one from today - qkuxm6ws.default-release - 15...... 0196 with 94 items, and 7ghfiw 15.default, from Jan 5, 2021, with 3 items. I assume I should use the one with today's date.

Are either or both those folders what I'm supposed to delete (after renaming them)?

Is there something I missed?

Oh.... I also lost all my log-ins!

Well, then I would first recommend checking other Firefox profiles you have. Maybe you were just switch to a new one / wrong one, and all you need is to choose your old profile.

  • Go to Firefox menu -> Profiles (if you have that option) and try opening all the profiles listed there one by one. For reference, see Manage Firefox profiles.
  • Go to about:profiles (just paste this to your address bar and press Enter) and try opening all the profiles listed there one by one (by clicking Launch profile in new browser).

If one of the profiles contains your data, you can set it as default. If not, please let me know and I'll explain how to create a new database.

I do NOT have a "Profiles" Menu Item. (I had looked for one before posting here.) I just looked again, on both the regular and the private window browser.

I had located the Profile folders (following the instructions posted on this sight). As I mentioned in my initial post - I had located 2 Profile folders. One had 4 items, the other had a long list.

I didn't see further instructions of *exactly* what to do. At this point, I posted here for help.

I just looked again in both the regular and the private browsers, and still can't find one.

I see a long list of add-ons under "profiles."
