As per subject. After i close FF - and it is no longer showing as an app in Task manager. When i try to restart it, it says it's still running and i have to ask it to close FF before it will open it again. AFAICS It happens randomly.

It may be relevant that when using CCleaner, it often (randomly) hangs when cleaning FF internet cache and says FF needs to be closed when it is already closed and does not appear in task manager. If i ask CCleaner to close FF, the application hangs.

Less likely perhaps to be relevant: i got a rogue change of Favicon on one site. I eventually deleted the relevant file hoping the Favicons would repopulate. Most have, but many haven't including hotmail and protonmail sites.

There seem to be many causes/solutions to FF hanging but i thought these specific circumstances might make it easier to suggest what the problem is exactly and how to fix it.

Thanks.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox Title bar, especially if you have multiple windows or Private Browsing windows open to prevent losing tabs in unnoticed windows.

  • "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File -> Exit
  • Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File -> Quit

Don't get me wrong - i appreciate the reply. Thank you. But is that the answer to a recent problem that hasn't occurred before in the last 18-odd years? I thought there might be some way of fixing it rather than modifying the way i have closed this (and most other applications) in the 30 years i've used windows. Perhaps I should have mentioned that this is a very infrequent glitch; it's not happened since i started this thread.

Ccleaner gives message of "Firefox needs to be closed. i though it was Ccleaner that was the problem. it's not Ccleaner's problem... I get the same message when I run advanced system care... when I click 'close for me' it just skips it over and over. i then run it after starting PC and it still tells me FF is running. the 1st time it lasted for weeks and seemed to fix itself. and it also wasn't fixed with 1 or 2 FF updates because i was waiting to see after updates that it would be fixed but wasn't. And I can't find Firefox running in Windows or advanced system care task manager. which means i cant close it manually. so I'm pretty sure it's a Firefox system problem... somehow FF is still running hidden in the background. i run malware fighter and anti virus to see if something is using it but comes up empty.
