I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser. Every time I do an internet search, I get an error message:

We're Sorry

Firefox had a problem and crashed. We'll try to restore your tabs and windows when it restarts.

To help us diagnose and fix the problem, you can send us a crash report.

(checked) Tell Mozilla about the crash so they can fix it

Details (button)

(I used to write a note, even giving my phone number asking for help, but after getting no help, I stopped writing details.)

(checked) Include the address of the page I was on

Your crash report will be submitted before you quit or restart.

Restart Firefox (button) Quit Firefox (button)--this is my typical response.

Any help would be appreciated. I am a dinosaur. I can use my PC, but am not very computer savvy.

My computer details: Dell PC Windows 10, version 21H1 LAN with 14.28 GB IP assignment Automatic (DHCP) Link speed (Receive/Transmit) 100/100 Mbps Manufacturer: Intel Description: Intel (R) Ethernet Connection (2) 1219-V Driver version: 12.18.9.10

If you need to know any additional info, please tell me where to find it on the PC. Please be as detailed as possible. I am a rank amateur.

Hi Bob, sorry to hear about this problem.

Is the problem specific to searches, for example, you could open a page by typing/pasting its address in the address bar, or using a bookmark?

Thank you for sharing your add-ons list. There are three unusual extensions relating to searching that you could try disabling to see whether that helps. In particular:

  • "Sponsored Search by SearchesCentral" ("sp@SearchesCentral")
  • "Yahoo Search by MediaPlayer10" ("{4932d1c2-0dc5-465d-8637-04c7c8aa1a39}")
  • "Yahoo Search From PDF to DOC" ("{14e9af87-e82e-4b56-a45a-cc8b63ac0aba}")

Part 1: Disable Suspicious/Nonessential Extensions

You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Click the slider switch to disable the three search extensions. Anything else suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

What if this page is blank, or blocked?

You can restart Firefox in its Safe/Troubleshoot Mode to disable all add-ons temporarily. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

Then OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If that menu item doesn't work:

Close out of Firefox and then on the next startup, hold down the Shift key. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Can you get those extensions disabled?

Part 2: Assign your preferred default search engine

This article will guide you to that section of the Settings page: Change your default search settings in Firefox.

And then... finally... can you search?

By the way, your crash reports were compiled for statistical purposes, but the developers almost never contact you unless they are puzzled about the reports and need more information.

You can share your crash reports with us if you like, there are report IDs and links on the about:crashes page (an internal page in your Firefox). Try clicking a recent link to see what the report looks like. If you are comfortable sharing that with support forum volunteers and other passers-by, you can either paste the report IDs or full URLs into a reply here.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP- in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

Using your mouse, mark the most recent 7 - 10 Submitted crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box and paste them in.
