Confused about bookmarks recovery.

I have never, to my recollection, lost bookmarks in the 17 years of using FF.

They are in other profiles, but I keep having to switch profiles due to terrible interruptions by script and/or a webpage is slowing down your browser ERRORS.

I thought support said I could transfer saved bm (from another profile) to desktop and recover from there, but a few files showed up ONLY after I signed up to sync. I do not use another device that saves bookmarks, so sync is actually not an option. However, as I said above, in the Restore function (library) (bookmarks) - the only time I could see the saved files was after syncing.

They did not transfer. Hence the confusion.

Thank you.

BTW, I first attempted to move bookmarks last week when I transferred my places.sqlite (I think I am remembering correctly) from one folder to the other. This was prior to choosing which profile to use as default.

Nothing I tried has worked successfully.

Also, and BTW again: a webpage slowing down your browser is only an issue when the page locks up as it just did in FB when I click on STOP IT. When reading online newspapers, I can click though to read an article. In FB, I cannot open anything to post, edit, or log out.

Ty.

Can you locate automatically created backups in the bookmarkbackups folder that Firefox create regularly (daily) when changes are detected (i.e. the generated hash is different from the hsh value in the filename in the most recent backup) ?

Which profile has your most recent backups ? Restoring the bookmark from the most recent backup should restore the bookmarks.

Note that you shouldn't worry too much about "webpage is slowing down your browser" errors because some websites have complicated JavaScript that can easily give issues. If you can rule out extensions as a possible cause then not much is wrong.

The language in your first paragraph is foreign to me.

Otherwise, yes, I can. I did that with the xxxx.sqlite file. Did not work.

Between the slowing computer (and script errors), I was losing my mind! It happened when I was in Safe Mode, the last time I checked.

Thank you, cor-el.

This has not been solved.

Also, I only have two items in bookmarks - which has a header at the top of my page. Why does bookmarks open in a separate window? Never did this before. It opens to *Library*.

about:config browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs is set to false and was set to false before.

Thank you.

If you click "Show All Bookmarks" in a menu then this opens the Bookmarks Manager (Library). This has always been the case in Firefox. There have been some changes to the shortcuts.

In Firefox 84+ you toggle the Bookmarks Toolbar via "Ctrl+Shift+B", previously used to open the Bookmarks Manager, in case you accidentally used this shortcut key. The keyboard shortcut to Open the Library is now "Ctrl+Shift+O". You toggle the bookmarks sidebar via "Ctrl+B" (unchanged).

How many profiles do you have ? Do any of these profile have all your bookmarks?

If you want to transfer or recover bookmarks from another profile then you can restore a JSON backup (this replaces all current bookmarks) or create an HTML backup using that profile and import this file via the Library in a profile.

Bookmarks have NEVER opened in a/the library before. I had bm from 2009 likely (a blue screen error tutor from a once-upon-a-time blue screen error). It was full of interesting sites. Whenever I opened it, it had a long, long list with icons. It never opened anything but the saved website. Trust me on this, please. I never made any adjustments.

I have four profiles. I opened three of them, but took from the 2019 file. I think they all had bookmark folders but none had a substantial amount - no more than 27 or so. I also have an OLD FF folder on my desktop.

I did the manual restore - your first option - the other day and saved about 12 files to desktop. When I opened library to restore them, there were only three in the drop-down window. I chose the one with the most files, but no bookmarks were present when I reopened it. I should have at least 70 or more (hard to say).

What is in places.sqlite - isn't that bookmarks + others? Why didn't that transfer when I copied it from profile to profile? Please clarify the name of the folder or file that I should l transfer. It is the larger file folder, isn't it - not a .json? Do I use copy/paste?

My library had none and still does not have any bookmarks (show all bookmarks). I have 2 and one is a Mozilla page. Used *recover lost or missing.* Then *manual backup.* Restore from backup/does that refer to a FF backup or HD backup?

Thank you.

If you do not get the bookmarks when you restore a JSON backup then it is possible that there are issues with places.sqlite in the profile folder.

This can be caused by a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created.
