Same issue as in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1175810

more options

I'm presented with two pop-ups that I must dismiss, every time I restart the browser. The first one reads:

User Account Control | Do you want to allow this application to make changes to your device?

After dismissing that, a second pop-up appears, reading in part:

Firefox Software Updater | Firefox can't update to the latest version. | Download a fresh copy of Firefox and we'll help you to install it

Then I must choose either "Download Firefox" or "Not now."

Please understand that I must deal with these pop-ups despite the fact that my Firefox is current.

The solutions suggested in the answer to the above-referenced previous post are of no help.

I've consulted my computer manufacturer, which told me that this issue is strictly one with Firefox. I hope you can help.

Check that Firefox isn't set to run as Administrator.

You can open the Properties of the Firefox desktop shortcut via the right-click context menu and check the "Compatibility" tab.

Make sure all items are deselected in the "Compatibility" tab of the Properties window.

  • Privilege Level: "Run this program as Administrator" should not be selected
  • "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" should not be selected

Also check the Properties of the firefox.exe program in the Firefox program folder.

Cor-el, this is the same answer you gave to the referenced similar question, which apparently solved for that user but hasn't solved for me. Let me tell you exactly what I've done, and maybe you can tell me what I've done wrong. First I opened Firefox's right-click menu from my taskbar icon (I don't use a desktop shortcut). I verified that Run as administrator is not checked, and that I'm not running the program in compatibility mode. Then I found firefox.exe in Win10's file explorer, and checking Properties found exactly the same results.

I hope you can help.

You can uninstall Firefox and the Mozilla Maintenance Service and do a clean reinstall as a normal user.

Do a clean reinstall of the current Firefox release and delete the Firefox program folder before installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows Registry and settings in security software.

  • do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall the current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including personal data in profiles created by other Firefox versions

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • it is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

Reinstall Firefox

Many thanks, cor-el. I was about to give up.

As you can probably understand, this is not my highest priority--but I'll follow your suggestions when I can.
