When I create a new tab I no longer get a search block in the centre of the page in addition to the one at the top of the screen. How can I restore this feature. It is very useful because you can input a search request without being presented with a menu o search methods and a list of recent searches.

You should check your Firefox settings. On the settings page, you should go to the Home section on the sidebar to see the relevant settings.

In the Home Content section, you will want to make sure that the Web Search checkbox is checked.

As for the New Windows and Tabs section, you want to make sure that the New tabs option is set to Firefox Home, not Blank Page.

Hope this helps.
