Prevent urlbar suggestions other than bookmarks - as I type.

When I click on the 'Show history' tab, it presents a list of previously accessed bookmarks.

I would prefer it only made suggestions, as I typed. This is exactly how it works when you open subsequent tabs.

I have set browser.urlbar.autoFill & browser.urlbar.autoFill typed > false, to no avail.

Does anyone know how to achieve this please?

From the Private browsing page.... Firefox will save your: bookmarks

You're right : new bookmarks will be saved.

You could uncheck 'bookmarks' in Options => Privacy & Security under 'Bookmarks', but that's not what you want.

I thought that jscher2000's post would come very close to what you want ........ (?)

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. At the bottom of the page, find Location Bar.

Thanks for the suggestion but I was aware there was that option.

How I would like it to work though, is search through the bookmarks as you type but not maintain a list of previously accessed bookmarks from previous sessions. Is that an option ?

It's not a big deal, I would just prefer it.

Thanks.

I'm not sure/

Thanks for the pointer. It's probably not possible, as if it's in the bookmarks why would you be bothered if it's in the history !  ;-)

One trick in the article "Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox" is that you can limit the History matches to what you previously typed in the address bar. Does that make sense?

Let's say you type puppies. Then type a space and a tilde:

puppies ~

This will exclude links you followed and bookmarks you clicked. However, if you triggered a bookmark by typing a few letters of its title or address and then clicked the suggestion, that counts as typed history.

Sample screenshot attached. Whenever I need to do an image search demo, I find this to be a safe and universally acceptable subject.

Thanks for going to the trouble of explaining that.

I suppose all I'm really asking, is that there is NO history kept at all.

Then, as you type, it simply identifies an individual bookmark from your bookmark list.

In that case, would you please take a look at this article :

I think that when you have opted to 'Delete history' that should include any bookmarks you've visited but it looks like that's not an option.

Thanks

Hi. You've made me look at this again.

I think i had changed 'browser.urlbar.autoFill.typed' to false before trying this and so ended up with my bookmarks not being searched as I typed which was pointless.

Having changed that back to true and removed the Bookmark history checkmark, it's behaving as i wanted.  :-)

I apologise for messing you all about but thanks for sticking with it.

Cheers.

You have absolutely nothing to apologize for  ! All this 'computer-stuff' can be pretty daunting and confusing - and you just did a great job figuring it out  !

If this is only about pages you visited in the previous session then you can use "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the browsing history.

If you use (permanent) Private Browsing mode then keep in mind that Tracking Protection is enabled by default and that some content might be blocked.

You can disable this feature in "Options/Preferences -> Privacy" or via the *Options/Preferences -> Privacy: "Use Tracking Protection in Private Windows"
