After the update to 38.0.1 from 31 thunderbird does not check for messages on startup, tried on two workstations, one account email account on each, one was pop and the other imap. The checkbox in accounts->server settings doesn't have any effect. Neither does safe mode or the advanced message option "include this server when getting new mail'. The activity manager doesn't even show it trying to connect. The polling function still works though so if I wait 10 minutes it gets the messages automatically...

I have reinstalled the programme once again and it is working OK but this has happened before and then fails once more.

Did the last install permanently fix this (so far)?

Same issue in double-safe mode, it doesn't check on startup but does after the 'check messages after X minutes' interval(set to 10min currently) is reached. It also checks after you click 'get messages'.

In account settings, what happens if you reduce the value of "check for new messages every ..."??

It checks sooner =) but even at one minute I think I'll still get people closing thunderbird before the messages come in. Also i'm lazy and I was hoping that I wouldn't have to change this setting on all the workstations as they are updated...

That was also me. There was another person on that forum that said they had the same problem though, so that's something?

So after more experimentation; I think the issue may actually be that sending and recieving both fail the first time they are attempted, the first 'get' fails silently, and the first send throws an error as well... everything works normally after that.

I have this and it started immediately after the update to 38.2 . It does not check for messages after every x minutes either. The only way at the moment is to check manually.

Rectangled, is the problem better when using version 38.2.0?

It didn't. I have reinstalled the programme once again and it is working OK but this has happened before and then fails once more.

Is there a particular file I can change/remove so I won't have to do a whole bunch of uninstall/reinstalls?
