Downloaded Firefox on 01/16/2015 on brand new laptop. Came with stuff that installed automatically, did not ask for, did not want. Vosteran & OptimizerPro. Why?

I am typing this from my tower and not my laptop. I cannot keep my laptop connected long enough to do anything on the internet since downloading Firefox on it.

I am NOT a happy camper. I went directly to the Mozilla web address, and downloaded and installed Firefox browser. It came with GARBAGE! Have had nothing but problems since. Have been working on this since 01/16/2015. It's messed up my internet access as well; I have to keep resetting it.

How on earth did these programs come bundled with my Firefox browser download? and Why are they there?

Firefox any version for any OS does not come bundled with extra stuff if you get it from www.mozilla.org

If you found the download site you downloaded from from a search in say Google or Bing then the site was likley one of the Ads above the real search results.

The other possibility is you are already infected.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Vosteran may have came with DownloadHelper for example.

Hi, as I stated I entered the web address for Mozilla directly. This was a brand new laptop, ordered with no bell-and-whistle programs. I wanted it as clean as possible and I have my own programs on disks (yes, I know, I'm a Luddite that way). Everything was updated and set up before I did anything. It worked perfectly 100% for an entire day. I went to IE, entered Mozilla's address directly, clicked on the download for Firefox, and Viola! crap entered my laptop. I took my laptop back to its original state with my external mirror (which by the way is brand new as well). It is now back to 100%. I have looked at the MalwareByte's program you suggested and it sounds like it may be worth installing. Thank you for that suggestion!

I bring this to to everyone's attention simply because something happened. This type of infection was discussed on one of these boards and someone suggested to note the date so as to narrow down the possible offender and that offender be removed. I am not angry with Mozilla or Firefox. I am angry with the persons responsible for putting this into their download package.

It would be unwise to claim mozilla.org servers their Content Distribution Network and files are immune to compromise and will never include corrupt downloads.

However the chances of you going to the correct site and downloading a Firefox install file that contains any added and undiscovered junk is vanishigly small.

As an example Mozilla are even considering the possiblities and mitigation methods if someone could hack compilers creating a backdoor to change Firefox code in a way that would be hard to detect, or that Mozilla may be legally and forced to secretly change code to assist in Government level surveillance. See this blog article by someone who was recently at the top of Mozilla management.

Often the redirecting address getfirefox.org is recomended but note if instead you were to try getfirefox.net you would likely get an official looking site but with modified downloads and outdated links to supposedly current verisons.

Hopefully you have now cleaned up your computer and intalled an unadulterated Firefox.

These two things never did come with Firefox from mozilla.org

It would hurt Mozilla far too much for what little gain in revenue and it would be a hot topic here, at mozillaZine forums and elsewhere if your claim was true.
