Firefox crashes constantly when opening Yahoo Mail and some other sites

Hi, since last night FF has been crashing constantly. It all started with opening yahoo mail page but just some hours ago it happened on Rolling Stone magazine's site. I have tried all the suggested troubleshooting (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-crashes-troubleshoot-prevent-and-get-help#w_check-to-see-if-the-crash-happens-in-safe-mode). Then I did a complete wipe and reinstall of FF as instructed here http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_Firefox and the problem persists (even when no extensions and no personal data exists). I am completely at loss here. It is my work-horse browser and I truly need it working. Please assist. Thank you P.S. I have always had a hanging problem with Flash if that might lead onto something.... Did Firefox's Safe Mode make any difference?

With Firefox closed, you can start up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Since the crash report references a Windows DLL, could you check for possible file damage? You can use the System File Checker as described in this Microsoft support article: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.


For Flash hanging, have you disabled the protected mode feature of the plugin? It has security benefits, but is not compatible with all systems for some reason.

You can do that by creating or editing a settings file. The following pages/posts provide different approaches:

Flash needs to completely unload from memory (exiting and starting Firefox up again might help) before this takes effect.

Thank you for you reply. I have indeed tried the Safe Mode to no avail. I have tried all troubleshooting that is given in the support pages. I tried also Reset. Then I did a clean uninstall (all components, incl. profiles). Nothing helped, thus my question here. I tried your reccommendation and ran the System File Checker. It did not find any corrupt files. I suppose it has something to do with my system, rather than FF. Who knows? I can see that there are some Windows updates today and will install them and see if anything changes. Thanks once again.

I forgot to mention regarding the flash hanging - Yes, I have done all the steps that you described but it never helped. I remember even trying some workaround with the plugin container - nothing ever helped. Luckily the world is moving forward and the place where I predominantly need flash - youtube, offers the html5 player for most videos so the importance of this problem has diminished enough not to bother with it anymore ;)

I really got tired of this. At the end I decided to reinstall the computer. I have so far reinstated it to a backup from an year ago. I am now running all windows updates. So far so good. I have not yet uploaded any of my previous FF profile settings. But no crashes thus far. I will keep you posted with the progress and if the crashes reappear.

When you reinstall Firefox, do not use the old profile. Use a new one. If the new one has no problem, then try the old one.

FredMcD, this is exactly what I tried - new FF, new profile - did not help.

I do think that it might have had to do with something outside FF that was conflicting with the browser. After the Windows reinstall I have build up pretty much the same configuration as before (both installed applications and FF add-ons) and so far no crashes. The only difference is that I do not have flash installed. As some point I will install and will report here.

There is obviously a problem with using Yahoo mail and Firefox...why not correct the problem, otherwise people are going to use Chrome, because there is no problem there....

The problem could be many things, some internal, and some external. You said other programs are able to access the site, so the problem is internal. Meaning; settings, firewall, add-ons, wal-ware . . . . .

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift (Mac Options) > key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

Hi cjp1840, there have been 3 major releases of Firefox since this thread started, so the reason your Firefox is malfunctioning may well be something new and different. If you want assistance with Yahoo (instead of switching to Chrome), could you start a new question? Here's a link for that:

Two things to know about posting a new question:

Here's my situation....after I've been in yahoo mail for about 4 or 5 minutes,. it suddenly freezes and I see in the upper left hand corner of the tool bar it say firefox not responding, and then sometimes it just crashes. I shut of java, and I disabled ad blocker plus and it still does it, although not as frequently. I'm not going to go into safe mode and do all the of things some have suggested. I'm not that tech savvy, if there's not a good fix, then I'll use another browser until Mozilla can fix this. It would seem to me that since Mozilla and Yahoo are going to be working together in future builds why not fix the issue rather than frustrate long time users.....

Hi cjp1840, I don't think this afflicts all Firefox/Yahoo users, and we need to learn more about your setup. I suggest starting a new question to follow up on this.
