Having posted a question about firfox sync, I am now struggling with the message interface.

When I post the question, there is no facility to follow this thread - as there ALWAYS is on EVERY forum in which I have ever participted.

However, when I have posted the question, there are menus for QUESTION TOOLS and QUESTION DETAILS. THESE ARE NOT HELPFUL.

The second item in QUESTION TOOLS is STOP EMAIL UPDATES.

?

Does this mean email updates by me, by others, or is this 'update' in fact a euphemism for being notified about a response to my question? Just in case anyone is unclear, 'email updates' is not a phrase used on ANY forum I have ever used.

The next item on this list is SUBSCRIBE TO FEED.

??

Does this mean a feed regarding this post? Or a general feed about questions? Or answers? Or a general feed from Mozilla about - well, who knows? The people designing this interface seem to be severely terse with their information.

Please would someone

1) let me know what all this means

2) rewrite the interface

Thanks in advance - on both counts.

Sorry that you are having problems with this forum. I raised some of the same issues that you mentioned, back during the beta testing phase before this forum went live - back in 2006 -2007. IMO, what "we" think is wrong or is different from other forums that we have used isn't going to be "fixed" - a standardized forum software package isn't being used here, it works as intended by the developers of this custom Mozilla built software.

When you post to any question, as the asker or making a reply, you are automatically sent e-mail alerts anytime someone else sends a reply on that question. If while cruising the forum, and you come across a post that you want to follow, on the upper right of that post is a link that will place you on the list for any new postings. If at any time you no longer want to receive any more alerts from whatever post, go to the upper right of that post and find the link to remove you from that list.

Thank you for your response. Got it.

Next problem. When will this be changed? This online facility is at odds with all my previous experience. And there are lots and lots of not terribly computer conscious people coming on line, many of us elderly. It DOES NOT HELP having settings and menu labels which do not conform to what peoiple are used to.

Come on people. Did you not notice? Windows 8 is a disaster, and the reason is not a mystery. Windows 8 is deeply unfamiliar. What happens is people will stick with what they have got. We want what is familiar FAR more than we want the latest and greatest. We want something that just works AND we want something we know how to use.

I think very strongly that Mozilla should ensure their system is easy to use by all ages and stages.

SO. There should be a tick box which states "subscribe / unsubscribe"

THAT is what we are used to.

Hi Ed.

Many thanks for your clear and informative response.

I am very sad, once again, that a significant organisation seems to be blind to the culture of their users. One can hardly single out Mozilla when Microsoft are so deeply and repeatedly at fault here, and have been joined by Ubuntu and Gnome with their massively unpopular developments. It seems that the full concept of product, so painstakingly acquired and supported in manufacturing, has not yet made it into mainstream software product development. All these examples are classic cases of push marketing gone as wrong as they deserve. Hey ho!
