I have just logged in anew. Firefox has offered to create a new “profile”. I chose a profile name I am sure I have used before. Firefox claims a user (profile) by that name “already exists”. How may I “re-unite with my lost self”? I refuse to use Firefox again until a logical and reasonable login process is established. I shall delete what seems to be a “new account” and use other browsers.

The name of the profile you see in the Profile Manager is the suffix. There is always a random part at the start of the name, but that doesn't matter for naming a profile. For current releases the default name is xxxxxxxx.default-release (default plus the update channel separated by a dash). You can find all registered profiles listed in profiles.ini. You can find the profiles.ini file in a hidden location in your home directory in ~/Library:

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/

On MacOS Monterey 12.6.3 I cannot find the described information. (I find, instead of “Firefox”, a folder named “Mozilla”, and it does not show the described profile). I’m sure the nickname is mine: it’s my email name from Gmail, which I acquired way back when Gmail was invitation-only. I’m at a loss as to any way else to regain access to the so-called duplicate profile name. So I’ll give up and delete the Firefox account.
